Martlets misfire as Lancers charge to victory

Cold shooting from beyond the arc proves costly in McGill's 65-48 loss to Windsor

(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)

TORONTO
—
Mackenzie Fineman scored a game-high 20 points as the Windsor Lancers defeated McGill 65-48 in women's basketball at the Darcel Wright Memorial Classic, Friday, at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The victory improved Windsor's preseason record to 4-1, while McGill dropped to 1-4 after the second round of the three-day tournament.

The biggest difference came in shooting accuracy and rebounding. McGill struggled from beyond the arc, connecting on just one of 16 three-point attempts, a 6.3 per cent success rate, while Windsor made six of 27. The Lancers also held a commanding 49-33 advantage on the boards, including 20 offensive rebounds.

Seyna Diggs, a six-foot forward, paced McGill with 20 points and a team-high six rebounds. The history senior from Montreal shot 8-for-23 from the field, including the Martlets' lone three-pointer, and added a blocked shot in 30 minutes of court time.

Rookie Sophie Dawe, a 5-foot-3 guard, contributed 11 points and five rebounds in 29 minutes. The 18-year-old from Vancouver shot 2-for-6 from the floor but made seven of eight free throws. It marked her third consecutive game in double figures after scoring 21 against Laurentian and 12 against TMU.

Daniella Mbengo added 10 points and two steals for McGill, while Justine Chatila contributed two points and five rebounds. Evelie Colclough collected two points, two rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

Fineman led Windsor with 20 points on 7-for-16 shooting, including four three-pointers in 10 attempts. She also contributed five rebounds and two steals in 26 minutes.

Leah Tate and Jade Hunte added nine points apiece for the Lancers. Hunte also registered a game-high four assists, while Kali Grootenboer chipped in seven points, six rebounds and three blocked shots.

Windsor seized control from the opening tip, racing to a 25-9 lead after the first quarter. The Lancers shot 53.3 per cent from the floor during the period, while holding McGill to just three field goals in 11 attempts.

The Martlets responded with their best offensive quarter in the second, outscoring Windsor 21-17 to reduce the deficit to 42-30 at halftime. Diggs supplied 11 points in the period, including McGill's only three-pointer of the contest.

But any hopes of a sustained comeback evaporated in the third quarter, when the Martlets endured another prolonged scoring drought. McGill managed just five points on 2-for-13 shooting, missing all five attempts from beyond the arc and committing eight turnovers. Windsor outscored McGill 14-5 to build a 56-35 lead entering the final stanza.

The Martlets showed some improvement in the fourth, outscoring Windsor 13-9 and shooting 40 per cent from the field. But the Lancers' lead proved insurmountable as Windsor completed the 17-point victory.

For the game, McGill shot just 28.8 per cent from the floor, making 15 of 52 attempts, compared with 33.9 per cent for Windsor. Both teams converted 17 free throws, although the Martlets required 23 attempts compared with 26 by the Lancers.

The teams were even in points from the paint at 28 apiece and each committed 21 turnovers. Windsor held a narrow 16-13 advantage in points off turnovers, while McGill enjoyed a 12-5 edge in second-chance points despite being outrebounded.

Windsor also received 25 points from its reserves, compared with 15 for McGill.

The tourney concludes Saturday at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. McGill will face the McMaster Marauders at noon, followed by Windsor against the Saskatchewan Huskies at 2 p.m.
