Martlets rally, but Bold refuse to fold

McGill outscores TMU 19-4 in final stanza but falls 62-55 in preseason hoops tourney opener

(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)

TORONTO — Myriam Kone scored a game-high 22 points as the undefeated Toronto Metropolitan University Bold held off a furious fourth-quarter rally to defeat McGill 62-55 in women's basketball at the Darcel Wright Memorial Classic, Thursday, at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The
victory improved TMU's unblemished preseason record to 4-0, while the Martlets dropped to 1-3 after the opening game of the three-day tournament.

The
biggest difference came on the boards and at the free-throw line. TMU held a commanding 46-32 rebounding advantage, including 19 offensive rebounds, and generated 22 second-chance points compared with nine for McGill. The Bold also made 16 of 25 free throws, while the Martlets converted just six of 12 attempts.

Charlotte
Jolin, a senior point-guard from Quebec City, paced McGill with 14 points, shooting 5-for-12 from the floor, including 3-for-6 from three-point range. She added four rebounds, three assists and a steal in 28 minutes.

Seyna
Diggs and Sophie Dawe contributed 12 points apiece. Diggs, a senior Montrealer, shot 5-for-11 from the field and added six rebounds, including four off the offensive glass, along with two assists and a pair of blocked shots. Dawe, an 18-year-old rookie guard from Vancouver, connected on four of nine three-point attempts and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds in 29 minutes.

It
marked the second consecutive game in double figures for Dawe, who was coming off a 21-point performance against Laurentian. She has now drained nine three-pointers over her last two outings.

Daniella
Mbengo and Mia Simpson added eight points apiece for McGill. Simpson contributed three assists, while Mbengo registered two steals.

McGill
actually held the upper hand in overall shooting accuracy, connecting on 35.2 per cent of its field-goal attempts compared with 33.9 for TMU. The Martlets also enjoyed a sizeable advantage from beyond the arc, making 11 of 29 three-point attempts, compared with six of 26 for the Bold.

Kone
led TMU with 22 points, eight rebounds and an 8-for-9 performance from the free-throw line. Hailey Franco DeRyck added nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass, while Catrina Garvey contributed eight points. Kait Nichols chipped in seven points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The
Martlets started strongly, opening an early 8-2 advantage and leading 17-15 after the first quarter. But McGill's offence stalled in the second, shooting just 3-for-13 from the floor and managing only eight points. TMU capitalized with a 21-8 advantage in the period to take a 36-25 lead into halftime.

The
Bold continued to pull away after the break, outscoring McGill 22-11 in the third quarter to build a 58-36 cushion entering the final stanza. TMU's lead reached a game-high 24 points late in the period.

McGill
mounted a determined comeback in the fourth, holding TMU to just four points on 1-for-9 shooting while producing 19 of its own. The Martlets shot 50 per cent from the floor in the quarter, including 4-for-9 from three-point range, and trimmed the deficit to eight points at 60-52 with 1:53 remaining.

But
the comeback ran out of time as TMU escaped with the seven-point victory. The Bold managed only one field goal in the final quarter and committed five turnovers, but their sizeable lead proved sufficient.

For
the game, McGill committed 20 turnovers compared with 18 by TMU. The Bold held a narrow 18-17 advantage in points off turnovers and outscored the Martlets 18-14 in the paint.

The
second round of the Darcel Wright Memorial Classic is scheduled for Friday afternoon. McGill will face the Windsor Lancers at 2 p.m., followed by Saskatchewan against host TMU at 4 p.m.
