MONTREAL — More than two dozen McGill University graduates, students and staff members will serve in official roles at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, running Feb. 5–22, 2026.
The McGill contingent includes two athletes, four coaches, five medical professionals, nine administrators and five accredited media members, reflecting the University's broad presence behind the scenes and on the field of play.
Athletes (2)
Two athletes with McGill ties are scheduled to compete in Italy.
Lilah Fear, an Arts graduate from 2023, has become the fourth McGillian to be named as an Olympic flag bearer. Born in Connecticut to Canadian parents, she will represent Great Britain in ice dancing alongside partner Lewis Gibson. The duo, who also competed at the Beijing 2022 Olympics, is scheduled to skate the rhythm dance on Feb. 9, with the free dance final set for Feb. 11 in Milan.
Kayla Tutino, a former McGill associate women's hockey coach from 2022 to 2024, is competing with host nation Italy. She scored Italy's first goal of the tournament in a 4–1 victory over France on Feb. 5. Italy's remaining preliminary-round games are scheduled for Feb. 7 (Sweden), Feb. 9 (Japan) and Feb. 10 (Germany).
Coaching and technical staff (4)
Also with the Italian women's hockey team are three McGill-affiliated staff members: assistant coach Alexandre Tremblay (BA '18), who both played and with the Redbirds, goaltending coach Karel St-Laurent (BA '17), and Mikael Nahabedian, a former McGill Martlets video technician who is serving as the team's video coach. Nahabedian currently works in the same role with the Montreal Victoire of the Professional Women's Hockey League.
The fourth coach with a McGill affiliation at the Games is Stephen Gough (BA '98, LLB '08), a former Canadian Olympian who now serves as head coach of the United States short-track speed skating team.
Administrators and officials (9)
Among the senior officials at the Games are Richard Pound (BCom '62, BCL '67), an International Olympic Committee member and former McGill varsity swimmer who competed at the 1960 Rome Olympics, and Hubert T. Lacroix (BCL '76, MBA '81), a former president of CBC/Radio-Canada and current member of the Canadian Olympic Committee board of directors. Lacroix also served as head coach of the McGill Martlets basketball program from 1978 to 1987.
Jennifer Heil (BCom '13), a former Olympic champion, will serve as Canada's chef de mission.
Former Martlets volleyball player Marie-Andrée Lessard (BCom '01) is serving in a senior Games leadership role with the Canadian Olympic Committee.
Marc Schryburt, a former McGill associate football coach, is at the Games as high-performance director for Canada's short-track speed skating program.
Additional McGill alumni working with Team Canada include Eric Myles (EMBA '11), chief sport officer; Shane Fombuena (BEd PE '13), athlete village operations; and Manny Almela (BA '99), communications manager and former sports editor of The McGill Tribune.
Also working at the Games is Ana Shapiro (BEd PE '98), a former McGill women's hockey player who oversees global event marketing for Allianz, an official Olympic partner.
Medical staff (5)
The Canadian Olympic Committee medical team includes two physicians affiliated with the McGill Sport Medicine Clinic: Dr. J. Scott Delaney (MDCM '91) and Dr. Gabrielle Ostiguy (Medical Fellowship '15).
Dr. Bob Foxford, an assistant professor at McGill and emergency and sports medicine specialist at the McGill University Health Centre, is attending his sixth Olympic Games as a sports medicine physician, including two previous appointments as Canada's chief medical officer.
Clinic physiotherapist John Flood is working with Great Britain's ice-dance team, while Jami Boyd (MSc(A)PT '11), is serving as physiotherapist with Canada's women's hockey team.
Media (5)
Five McGill graduates are covering the Games as members of major media organizations.
On site in Italy are former McGill football all-star and NFL player Dr. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (MDCM '18), contributing to coverage for Radio-Canada, and Franklin Rubinstein (BCom '98), a former Tribune sports editor now serving as OBS director of hockey production.
Based in Canada are Bob Babinski (BA '86), a senior consulting talent producer at CBC in Toronto; former Martlets hockey standout Ann-Sophie Bettez (BCom '11), serving as a hockey analyst from Radio-Canada's Montreal broadcast centre; and former McGill swimmer Jennifer Lorentz (BA '01), who is covering her eighth Olympic Games as a graphics designer with NBC Sports in Stamford, Conn.
A long Olympic tradition
McGill has a long tradition of Olympic involvement. Percival Molson Memorial Stadium hosted the field hockey tournament at the 1976 Montreal Games, and since first appearing at the 1904 Olympics, McGill athletes have earned 34 Olympic medals, including 12 gold, eight silver and 14 bronze.
The University's first Olympian was Percival Molson, who competed in track and field at the 1904 St. Louis Games.
Aside from the aforementioned Lilah Fear, three other McGill graduates have served as Olympic flag-bearers. Representing Canada was boxer Dr. George B. Maughan at the 1932 Los Angeles Games and track star James Worrall at the 1936 Games in Berlin. And representing Armenia at the 2020 Tokyo Games was figure skater Tina Garabedian.
McGill gymnast R. Tait McKenzie, a world-renowned sculptor, was the only artist to take part in five Olympiads. He represented the country in art competitions, winning a bronze medal at the 1932 Games in Los Angeles in "mixed sculpturing - medals and reliefs."
Legendary physician-athlete Dr. Phil Edwards remains the University's most decorated Olympian with five bronze medals in track and field at the Games in Amsterdam (1928), Los Angeles (1932) and Berlin (1936).
Swimmer George Hodgson, who reached the top of the podium twice at Stockholm in 1912, is the only McGillian to strike gold at the Summer Olympics.
Five McGill students have struck gold a combined total of 10 times at the Winter Olympics.
Hockey goaltenders Kim St-Pierre and McGill teammate Charline Labonté each earned gold at three separate Olympiads. St-Pierre won at 2002 in Salt Lake City, 2006 in Turin and 2010 in Vancouver, while Labonté stood atop the podium in 2006, 2010 and 2014 in Sochi. Another McGill teammate was Catherine Ward, who was part of the golden squad in 2010. Freestyle skier Jennifer Heil struck gold in 2006 and hockey player Mélodie Daoust won gold in both 2014 and 2022.
A complete list of McGill Olympians and medal winners since 1900 appears below, following the French version.
