Triple gold powers Martlets at Sherbrooke qualifying meet as RSEQ championship looms

Borgers, Nicolas-Etienne and 4x200 relay lead McGill women to second place

SHERBROOKE — The McGill University women's track and field program captured three gold medals and 11 podium finishes overall to secure a second-place team result at the Sherbrooke RSEQ Last Chance qualifying meet, a two-day competition held Feb. 13-14. The meet failed to produce any new qualifiers for Martlets to meet the lofty standards for competing at nationals. The only remaining route is through the upcoming RSEQ conference championships, slated to be hosted by McGill, Feb. 20-22, where a qualifying standard or a gold medal will get the job done.

Sherbrooke finished first of nine teams with 107.5 points, followed by McGill (103), Montréal (74.5), Concordia (64), UQAC (49), UQAM (36), Laval (23), ETS (12) and UQTR (11).

Chloe Nicolas-Etienne, an 18-year-old Arts freshman from King, Ont., was McGill's highest scorer with a pair of gold medal performances. She took the 60-metre sprint in 7.91 seconds —  the school record in 7.32 — and ran the leadoff leg on McGill's winning 4x200 relay. The quartet, which topped the podium in 1:46.38, also included sophomore Jade Jones of Toronto, sophomore Rebecca El-Mairy of Montreal and Natalya Babkine, a freshman from Montreal West.

Also striking gold for the Martlets was Emilie Borgers, a  microbiology and immunology junior from Mamaroneck, N.Y., who won the 1500 metres in 4:54.51.

The McGill women added four silver medals, with Mia Blackmore-Barnable (1500m, 4:54.90), Gabriella Barton (1000m, 2:59.81), Kiara Gilroy (60m hurdles, 9.41), and the the 4x400-metre relay (3:57.13).

Four bronze medals rounded out the podium haul: Arowyn Fitzpatrick (1000m, 3:01.87), Ella Durno (triple jump, 10.61m), Katie Purves (hammer throw, 11.98m), and Mia Ferracci (pole vault, 2.90m).
