MONTREAL — Loic Courville-Fortin of Repentigny, Que., captured two gold medals and a pair of silvers to finish second in the athlete-of-the-meet scoring as McGill won the men's division at the opening RSEQ University Cup swim meet of the 2026-27 season, hosted by the Université de Montréal at the CEPSUM short-course pool on Saturday.

The Redbirds topped the standings with 452 points, ahead of runner-up Ottawa (306), Laval (262), Montreal (209) and Sherbrooke (69). McGill produced a dozen podiums, including five gold, five silver and a pair of bronzes. The result marked a 17th consecutive RSEQ meet victory for the McGill men since 2022, when they finished second at an RSEQ University Cup 2 competition in Ottawa.

Courville-Fortin, 22, won individual gold in the 50-metre backstroke (24.59 seconds) and 100 backstroke (53.90). The biochemistry junior also contributed to two silver-medal relays, finishing the meet with four trips to the podium.

The two-time McGill athlete-of-the-year laureate earned 613 points in the RSEQ's swimmer-of-the-meet calculations, which combine an athlete's highest World Aquatics performance rating with bonuses for medals and records. Raphaël Blamart, a 19-year-old from the Montreal Carabins, took the award with 646 points after collecting three gold medals and one silver.

McGill's Hocine Feddag, a 6-foot-5 mechanical engineering junior from Saint-Hubert, Que., collected one gold and two silvers and ranked third in the top athlete standings with 521 points, followed by teammate Augustin Boussion in fourth with 502.5.

The Redbirds demonstrated their depth in the relays, winning two events and finishing first and third in the final race of the evening.

In the 4x50 freestyle relay, Sébastien Voicu, Karl Abou Ghannam, Feddag and Boussion combined to win gold in 1:31.77, ahead of Ottawa (1:32.25) and Montreal (1:33.11).

McGill completed its relay gold-medal double in the 4x200 freestyle, where Artiom Volodin, Voicu, Yegor Semenyuk and Alexandre Yazedjian finished first in 7:24.13. Montreal was second in 7:27.95.

The Redbirds also claimed bronze in the same event as Keenan Gander, Torren Vandersteen, Joshua Perkins and William Morin touched in 7:37.13, edging Ottawa (7:38.29) for the final podium position.

McGill head coach Peter Carpenter said the relay performances were particularly encouraging.

"For me the highlights were the relays," Carpenter said after the meet, noting that the Redbirds matched the women's relay success by placing first and third in the final event of the evening.

The Redbirds also collected silver in the 4x50 medley relay, where Courville-Fortin, Adam Wang, Karl Abou Ghannam and Feddag finished in 1:39.87, just four-hundredths of a second behind Laval (1:39.83).

In individual competition, Boussion, a 19-year-old economics sophomore from Paris, France, won the 100 freestyle in 50.36, with teammate Feddag earning silver in 50.69. Laval's Loïc Trépanier completed the podium in 50.84.

Courville-Fortin added silver in the 200 individual medley, finishing in 2:02.54 behind Blamart (2:00.26). Yazedjian gave McGill another medal in the same race, taking bronze in 2:03.03.

Volodin earned silver in the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:56.49, finishing behind Blamart (3:55.16). Laval's Théo Druenne was third in 3:58.13.

Robin Domingo added another silver for McGill in the 200 butterfly, touching in 2:04.57, just 15-hundredths of a second behind Laval's Tristan Labarre (2:04.42).

The Redbirds' performances came against increasingly competitive opposition across the conference, with several universities strengthening their rosters through recruiting.

"The league has gotten much more competitive with all the teams picking up significant recruits," Carpenter said. "We swam amazing all the way through."

McGill is scheduled to host the second RSEQ University Cup meet on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Memorial Pool, located inside the Sir Arthur Currie Gymnasium.
