MONTREAL —
Julie Bortolato of Mountain View, Calif., paced the Martlets to gold as McGill collected five podiums and finished second of 19 teams at the 29th annual McGill Team Challenge, a two-day indoor meet that wrapped up on Saturday.
Billed as the largest indoor track meet in Canada, the event drew 54 teams and clubs, with a total of 864 athletes. Two records were set on the women's side.
Maggie Smith of the Athletics East Nova Scotia club registered 4:16.55 in the 1500m, erasing the fieldhouse mark (4:18.75) set in 2007 by
Megan Brown from the U of T Varsity Blues. Smith's time was not considered a Team Challenge meet record, since results from clubs are treated as exhibition and don't count in the scoring for this meet. The other record established was in the women's 60m hurdles, where
Maria Thérésa Ulysse of the Montreal Carabins was clocked in 8.52 to tie the meet record previously set by Sherbrooke's
Maoly St-Germain.
The Martlets finished second of 19 universities in the women's division. McGill collected 108 points in the team standings to finish just 11 behind the first-place Montreal Carabins.
Bortolato, a 21-year-old cognitive science sophomore, cleared 3.50 metres in the women's pole vault on Friday, to earn the Martlets' lone gold victory of the meet. The team added to its medal count with three silvers and a bronze.
The Martlets 4x800-metre relay produced a silver medal finish, as
Marie Billaud,
Arowyn Fitzpatrick,
Emma Veilleux and
Julia Berube-Boutin combined for a time of 9:11.32.
The Martlets followed with another relay silver in the 4x400, where
Ashleigh Brown,
Jade Jones,
Rebecca El Mairy and
Natalya Babkine completed the race in 3:57.45.
In the field,
Rebecca Warcholak, a science junior from Toronto, added silver in the triple jump with a leap of 11.72 metres.
Ella Villeneuve, a science senior from Richmond, Vermont, rounded out McGill's podium finishes with bronze in the hammer throw, tossing a distance of 12.91m.
Next on tap is the Boston University Valentine Invitational and the Carleton last Chance qualifying meet, Feb. 13-14 before McGill serves as host of the RSEQ championships, Feb. 20-21.
