TORONTO, ONT – The McGill University women's swim program produced a school record and a silver medal performance to highlight the team's results on Day 2 at the U SPORTS championships, Friday.
Six total U SPORTS meet records tumbled while both the UBC Thunderbirds women's and men's teams continued to hold their leads in the overall standings. McGill sits third of 25 schools on the women's side and fourth in the men's division.
The evening session was preceded by the presentation to the U SPORTS Student-athlete Community Service Awards to McGill's
Erik Linseisen and
Marcella Whelan of the Memorial Sea-Hawks.
Beset with a plethora of fourth-place finishes, the Martlets finally reached the podium with the 4x200m relay squad which was clocked in eight minutes, 7.88 seconds. The result shredded the previous short-course school standard of 8:12.00 set in 2022. It was the second Martlets record to fall in as many days, in the wake of
Emilie de Chazal's performance on Thursday. The physical education sophomore from Zug, Switzerland, placed sixth in the 100m butterfly, clocking in at 1:01.24, which erased the school mark of 1:01.60 set in 2020 by
Grace Valihora.
Despite McGill's superb time in the 4x200, UBC easily won the race in 7:54.04, while Calgary finished third in 8:10.98.
The McGill foursome included
Naomie Lo, a software engineering senior from Toronto, in the leadoff spot.
Elizabeth Ling, a civil engineering senior from Calgary, swam the second leg. She was followed by
Iris Tinmouth, a science junior from Comox, B.C., and
Maya McGhan, a management sophomore from Ottawa.
UBC's
Kayla Sanchez, a two-time Olympian, claimed the women's 50m freestyle gold medal in a championship meet record time of 24.18. She added another record in the 50m butterfly (25.85), securing a second individual gold on Day 2 and third in the meet. Sanchez then joined
Emma O'Croinin,
Anna Dumont-Belanger and
Bridget Burton to win the 4x200 freestyle relay, rounding out a spectacular Day 2.
The full list of event medalists is included below.
Swimmers will conclude the national championships inside the U of T Athletic Centre's Varsity Pool on Saturday morning beginning with prelims at 9:30 a.m., followed by finals at 5:30 p.m.
