VICTORIA, B.C. — A dozen members of the Quebec championship winning McGill University varsity swim program, including two coaches, are making waves this week at the 2025 Bell Canadian Swimming Trials, held at Saanich Commonwealth Place from June 7 to 12.
Head coach
Peter Carpenter and assistant coach
Savannah King are guiding the McGill contingent, which includes
Jagdev Gill of the men's team, a biology and mathematics junior from Brockville, Ont. Representing the Martlets is
Iris Tinmouth, a third-year microbiology and immunology student from Comox, B.C., and
Emilie de Chazal, a physical and health education sophomore from Zug, Switzerland.
Seven other current McGill student-athletes are competing with their respective club teams.
Loïc Courville-Fortin, who won the Forbes Trophy in April as McGill's male athlete of the year, is racing for Club Aquatique de Montréal (CAMO) alongside Redbirds teammates
Artiom Volodin and
Hocine Feddag.
Courville-Fortin, a biochemistry freshman from Repentigny, Que., was a standout on Day 1 at the Canadian Trials, posting a personal best of 55.54 seconds in the men's 100-metre backstroke to finish sixth in the A final. Volodin, a computer engineering sophomore from Montreal, and Feddag, a mechanical engineering freshman from St. Hubert, Que., round out the CAMO trio.
Emilia Mastromatteo, a third-year anatomy and cell biology major from Kenora, Ont., is competing with her hometown Kenora Swimming Sharks.
Kealeigh McLeod, an Arts and Science freshman from Calgary, is racing for Calgary Swimming. Both are members of the McGill women's team.
On the men's side,
Keenan Gander, a management freshman from Maple Ridge, B.C., represents the Ridge Meadows Titans, while
Yegor Semenyuk, a software engineering freshman from Gatineau, Que., is swimming for Natation Gatineau.
The Trials, which feature over 700 swimmers from 148 clubs across nine provinces, are a critical qualifier for international competitions, including the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore and the World Para Swimming Championships.
The Redbirds and Martlets are coming off five consecutive RSEQ conference titles in both the men's and women's divisions. With McGill's swimmers and coaches in the spotlight, the university's program continues to showcase its depth and talent on the national stage.
