QUEBEC CITY – The McGill University badminton team had mixed results at the Yonex Canadian collegiate championships, hosted by Universite Laval in the provincial capital, over the weekend. Athletes from the Redbirds and Martlets combined to win four out of eight matches.
In men's doubles,
Alex He, a civil engineering junior from Montreal, teamed up with
Charles Hughes to rally for a 2-1 in their opening round of 64, defeating the duo of Etienne Dupont and Alexi Letarte. After dropping the first set 21-17, they bounced back to win 21-19 and 21-14. However, the pair lost to Ivan Cheng and Connor Johanson in the round of 32 by set scores of 21-16, 13-21 and 15-21.
In women's doubles,
Lareina Shen, a physiology junior from Halifax, and her partner Simone Huang, won 2-1 in the opening round of 32, defeating the pair of Yu-Jade Adam-Paquet and Sophie Caron. After dropping the first set 21-11, they came from behind to win 21-9 and 21-17. But they faltered in the round of 16, winning the first set 21-15, before losing 16-21 and 12-21.
In men's singles,
Sean Yin, a psychology junior from South Surrey, B.C., was defeated 24-22, 7-21 and 10-21 by Olivier Hamel in the round of 16.
In mixed doubles,
Sean Yin teamed up with Martyna Metys to sweep the duo of Travis Lee and Meagan Laforge in the round of 64 by scores of 21-9 and 21-18. In the next round, Yin and Metys won again, defeating Travis Lee and Meagan Laforge 21-11 and 21-12. But the win streak stopped in the round of 16, where they fell 21-11 and 21-3 to Noah Xu and Jessica V. Cheng.
This was McGill's final competition of the varsity badminton schedule. During the RSEQ season, the Martlets finished second out of seven schools in the 7-on-7 team standings with a 10-2 record behind the division-leading Montreal Carabins (12-0). On the men's side, the Redbirds placed fourth with a 5-7 record. In the 8-on-6 mixed standings, McGill finished third overall at 8-4. Two players merited all-conference honours, including senior
Eliana Zhang, a medical school student from Ile-Bizard, Que., who was voted player of the year, and
Nicolas Germain, a physical and health education junior from Laval, Que.
