SHERBROOKE, Que. — Nicolas Germain's steady climb through the RSEQ badminton ranks reached its peak over the weekend.

The McGill Redbirds senior from Laval, Que., captured gold in men's singles at the RSEQ individual championships, held March 6-8 in Sherbrooke, cementing his place among the conference's elite.

A 23-year-old physical education student majoring in kinesiology, Germain capped a decorated four-year career that included RSEQ rookie-of-the-year honours in 2022-23, a silver-medal finish as a sophomore, bronze last season and, now, the provincial men's singles crown.

Seeded second entering the tournament, Germain advanced through the draw with poise, defeating Sherbrooke's Olivier Laliberté in straight sets before outlasting teammate Siqi Zhang in a three-game quarterfinal. He then earned a straight-sets victory over Laval's Guillaume Blais in the semifinal. Germain sealed the title with a three-set win over top-seeded Étienne Chouinard of Laval, 21-12, 18-21, 21-16.

Germain also competed in mixed doubles alongside teammate Lareina Shen, with the McGill duo advancing to the quarterfinal round.

Elsewhere, several Redbirds and Martlets athletes delivered solid performances across the weekend. McGill competitors reached the later rounds in multiple draws, including men's and women's singles and doubles events.

In men's doubles, McGill's Skyler Xiao and Teague Chan Carusone highlighted the weekend by capturing gold in the consolation bracket, while multiple McGill pairs advanced to the quarterfinals and beyond in the main draw.

On the women's side, Parmida Nami reached the final of the consolation draw in women's singles, adding to a solid showing from the Martlets contingent.

CHAMPIONNATS DE BADMINTON DU RSEQ : Germain atteint le sommet, de recrue de l'année à champion du circuit

Le vétéran de McGill complète sa progression avec un titre provincial

SHERBROOKE — Nicolas Germain a atteint le sommet du badminton universitaire québécois.

L'athlète des Redbirds de McGill, originaire de Laval, a remporté la médaille d'or en simple masculin lors du championnat individuel du RSEQ, disputé du 6 au 8 mars à Sherbrooke, confirmant son statut parmi l'élite du circuit.

Âgé de 23 ans et étudiant en éducation physique, avec une majeure en kinésiologie, Germain couronne ainsi une brillante carrière universitaire. Nommé recrue de l'année du RSEQ en 2022-2023, il avait ensuite décroché l'argent à sa deuxième saison, avant de monter sur la troisième marche du podium l'an dernier. Il ajoute maintenant le titre provincial à sa feuille de route.

Deuxième tête de série du tournoi, Germain a connu un parcours solide. Il a d'abord disposé d'Olivier Laliberté, de Sherbrooke, en deux manches, avant de prendre la mesure de son coéquipier Siqi Zhang en quart de finale au terme d'un duel de trois manches. En demi-finale, il a vaincu Guillaume Blais, de Laval, en deux manches.

En finale, Germain a eu raison du favori et premier tête de série, Étienne Chouinard, également de Laval, en trois manches de 21-12, 18-21 et 21-16 pour mettre la main sur le titre .

Germain a également pris part au double mixte aux côtés de Lareina Shen, le duo de McGill atteignant les quarts de finale.

Par ailleurs, plusieurs représentants des Redbirds et des Martlets ont signé de bonnes performances au cours de la fin de semaine, atteignant les rondes avancées dans différentes épreuves.
