MONTREAL — Nicolas Germain of Laval, Que., led McGill's efforts at the 2026 YONEX Canadian University/College Badminton Championships, reaching the quarter-finals in both men's singles and men's doubles as McGill placed eighth in the team competition at Collège Édouard-Montpetit, March 21-23.

Germain, a 23-year-old physical and health education senior, posted a 4-2 record overall. Seeded among the top four in men's singles, the RSEQ conference champion opened with straight-set victories over Laval's Nathan Bédard (21-12, 21-9) and Toronto's Jackson Zhou (21-16, 21-19) before falling in three games in the quarter-finals to eventual finalist Harold Tan.

Germain also advanced to the quarter-finals in men's doubles — winning 2-1 in the round of 32 and sweeping the round of 16 before losing 2-0 in the quarter-finals — making him the only McGill athlete to reach the final eight in two events.

McGill also saw a strong showing in mixed doubles from Alex He, a civil engineering senior from Montreal, who advanced to the round of 16 with his partner before falling to a pair that went on to reach the final.

In women's singles, Caline Huang, a kinesiology sophomore from Montreal, Que., posted McGill's best result by advancing to the consolation final. After dropping her opening match in the championship draw, she rebounded with multiple wins before finishing runner-up in the placement bracket.

Team competition recap

McGill competed in Group A alongside Toronto, Alberta and the Montreal Carabins. The team went 0-3 in the preliminary round, falling 5-0 to the Carabins, 4-1 to Alberta and 5-0 to Toronto.

Toronto topped the group with a perfect 3-0 record, followed by Alberta (2-1) and the Carabins (1-2), while McGill advanced to the consolation round for teams ranked fifth through eighth.

In Group B, Waterloo led the standings at 3-0, ahead of Western (2-1), Laval (1-2) and Sherbrooke (0-3).

McGill finished the preliminary phase with a 1-14 record in matches and 5-28 in games.

In the consolation round, McGill dropped a 3-0 decision to Laval before closing out the tournament with a 3-2 victory over Sherbrooke.

The results left McGill eighth overall in the final standings.

National champions

Toronto's Zachary Desjardins captured the men's singles title, while Emma Meng won women's singles and teamed with Chloe Choi to claim the women's doubles crown. Nathan Mills and Harold Tan captured the men's doubles title, with Mills also winning mixed doubles alongside Allison Cheng.

MONTRÉAL — Nicolas Germain, de Laval (Québec), a mené la charge de McGill lors des Championnats universitaires et collégiaux canadiens de badminton YONEX 2026, atteignant les quarts de finale en simple et en double messieurs, tandis que McGill terminait huitième du classement par équipes au Collège Édouard-Montpetit, du 21 au 23 mars.

Germain, étudiant de 23 ans en dernière année d'éducation physique et santé, a affiché un bilan global de 4 victoires pour 2 défaites. Classé parmi les quatre premiers têtes de série en simple masculin, le champion de la RSEQ a débuté par des victoires en deux sets contre Nathan Bédard de Laval (21-12, 21-9) et Jackson Zhou de Toronto (21-16, 21-19), avant de s'incliner en trois sets en quarts de finale face au futur finaliste Harold Tan.

Germain s'est également qualifié pour les quarts de finale en double masculin — s'imposant 2-1 en 32e de finale et remportant ses deux matchs en 16e de finale avant de s'incliner 2-0 en quarts de finale —, ce qui fait de lui le seul athlète de McGill à avoir atteint les quarts de finale dans deux épreuves.

McGill a aussi obtenu une bonne performance en double mixte grâce à Alex He, un étudiant de quatrième année en génie civil originaire de Montréal, qui a atteint les huitièmes de finale avec sa partenaire avant de s'incliner face à une paire qui a ensuite accédé à la finale.

Chez les femmes, Caline Huang, une étudiante de deuxième année en kinésiologie originaire de Montréal, a signé le meilleur résultat de McGill en atteignant la finale du tableau consolation en simple féminin. Après une défaite à son premier match du tableau principal, elle a rebondi avec plusieurs victoires avant de s'incliner en finale de consolation.

Compétition par équipes

McGill évoluait dans le groupe A en compagnie de Toronto, de l'Alberta et des Carabins de l'Université de Montréal. L'équipe a subi trois revers en ronde préliminaire, s'inclinant 5-0 face aux Carabins, 4-1 contre l'Alberta et 5-0 contre Toronto.

Toronto a dominé le groupe avec une fiche parfaite de 3-0, devant l'Alberta (2-1) et les Carabins (1-2), tandis que McGill a accédé au tableau de consolation pour les équipes classées de la cinquième à la huitième place.

Dans le groupe B, Waterloo a terminé en tête (3-0), devant Western (2-1), Laval (1-2) et Sherbrooke (0-3).

McGill a complété la phase préliminaire avec un dossier de 1-14 en matchs et de 5-28 en manches.

En ronde de consolation, McGill a d'abord subi un revers de 3-0 contre Laval avant de conclure le tournoi avec une victoire de 3-2 contre Sherbrooke.

Champions nationaux

Zachary Desjardins, de l'Université de Montréal, a remporté le titre en simple masculin. Chez les femmes, Emma Meng (Toronto) a été sacrée championne en simple et a également remporté le double féminin aux côtés de Chloe Choi.

Nathan Mills et Harold Tan, de Toronto, ont gagné le double masculin, tandis que Mills a aussi triomphé en double mixte avec Allison Cheng.
