MONTREAL – A miracle finish capped McGill's women's rugby season on Saturday as the Martlets rallied from a 21-point deficit to stun Bishop's 38-35 in injury time at Percival Molson Stadium.
Flanker Evelyne Desmarais of Candiac, Que., scored the decisive try and added the game-winning conversion as time expired, sealing McGill's first victory of the season and snapping a 16-game losing streak. The Martlets' previous win was a 22-13 decision over Bishop's on Aug. 31, 2023.
Trailing 35-14 early in the second half, McGill mounted a dramatic comeback with four unanswered tries in the final 36 minutes, including 13 minutes of extra time. It marked McGill's highest offensive output since a 40-8 win — also over Bishop's — on Oct. 6, 2017.
Desmarais, a management sophomore, tallied a game-high 13 points on two tries and four conversions. She was one of six different try scorers for the Martlets, who reached the four-try threshold for the first time this year to earn a bonus point in the standings.
The winning phase began at the BU 15-yard line, where Isis Martinez initiated the sequence with a quick pass to Cecilia Lee, who offloaded to Lily-Rose Giroux. Giroux found Desmarais in stride, and the flanker darted the final eight yards to score to the left of the posts, igniting a jubilant celebration, including a dozen graduating seniors playing their final game for second-year head coach Allan Swetman.
McGill (1-5) finished in a three-way tie with Bishop's and Sherbrooke for the final three spots in the eight-team RSEQ conference.

MONTRÉAL – Une fin de match miraculeuse a couronné la saison de rugby féminin de McGill samedi, alors que les Martlets ont comblé un déficit de 21 points pour surprendre Bishop's 38-35 dans les dernières secondes du match au stade Percival Molson.
La flanker Evelyne Desmarais, de Candiac, au Québec, a marqué l'essai décisif et ajouté la transformation gagnante à la fin du temps réglementaire, scellant ainsi la première victoire de McGill cette saison et mettant fin à une série de 16 défaites consécutives. La dernière victoire des Martlets remontait au 31 août 2023, lorsqu'elles avaient battu Bishop's 22-13.
Menées 35-14 au début de la deuxième mi-temps, les Martlets ont réussi un retour spectaculaire avec quatre essais sans réponse dans les 36 dernières minutes, dont 13 minutes de temps additionnel. Il s'agit de la meilleure performance offensive de McGill depuis sa victoire 40-8, également contre Bishop's, le 6 octobre 2017.
Desmarais, étudiante en deuxième année de gestion, a marqué 13 points, le meilleur total du match, grâce à deux essais et quatre transformations. Elle a été l'une des six marqueuses d'essais des Martlets, qui ont atteint le seuil des quatre essais pour la première fois cette année, ce qui leur a permis de gagner un point bonus au classement.
La phase décisive a commencé sur la ligne des 15 yards de Bishop's, où Isis Martinez a lancé la séquence avec une passe rapide à Cecilia Lee, qui a fait une passe à Lily-Rose Giroux. Giroux a trouvé Desmarais en pleine course, et la flanker a parcouru les huit derniers yards pour marquer à gauche des poteaux, déclenchant une célébration jubilatoire, notamment parmi une douzaine de seniors qui disputaient leur dernier match sous la houlette de l'entraîneur-chef Allan Swetman.
McGill (1-5) a terminé à égalité avec Bishop's et Sherbrooke pour les trois dernières places de la conférence RSEQ, qui compte huit équipes.
