MONTREAL –
Olivia Miller scored a game-high 14 points as Concordia defeated visiting McGill 53-5 to open the RSEQ women's rugby season at the Loyola campus field, Sunday.
At stake was the 18th annual Kelly-Anne Drummond Memorial Cup, symbolic of women's university rugby supremacy in Montreal and a tribute to the former Stinger player who died tragically on Oct. 4, 2004.
The Stingers, coached by former McGill bench boss
Craig Beemer, tallied nine tries to earn an extra point in the RSEQ standings. Bonus points are awarded to a team that scores four (or more) tries and/or teams that lose by seven points or less. They took a 34-0 lead into halftime and won the second stanza 19-5.
McGill, coach for the third consecutive season by
Allan Swetman, broke the shutout bid with 36:26 remaining when
Emma Redmond, an accounting junior from Laval, Que., pushed across after the line for a try, reducing the gap to 34-5. The conversion was missed by
Emma Piers.

Raurie Moffat, a physical education senior from Markdale, Ont., was named as McGill's player of the game.
Miller paced the Concordia attack with two tries and had a pair of conversions.
Madeleine McTavish added a try and two conversions. Single tries were scored by
Megan Allard,
Meaghan Comeau,
Steve Kalaydjian,
Juliette Lachapelle-Marceau,
Sarah Montminy and
Joelle Vallee.
Drummond was a member of the Concordia women's rugby team from 1999 through 2001. She graduated with a major in Communications in 2002. Donations were collected at the gate to help support WomenAWARE programs. The Montreal organization is a non-profit, community-based centre founded by former victims of domestic violence. Its mission is to support, inspire and empower as well as prevent and strive to end domestic violence against women, men, youth and children.
Next weekend, McGill (0-1) will make the short hike around Mt. Royal to confront the Montreal Carabins (0-1) at Terrain Vincent d'Indy on Friday the 13th at 6 p.m. the following ay, Concordia (2-0) travels to the nation's capital to play the defending conference champion Ottawa Gee-Gees (2-0).
