McGill hoops grad, Hollywood actor Cam Mathison loses home in LA wildfire

MONTREAL – Former McGill University basketball player Cameron Mathison, a 55-year-old Hollywood actor, announced Wednesday on his Instagram social media account that he has lost his house in Altadena, Calif., during the devastating Eaton Canyon wildfire that has engulfed the Los Angeles county area this week.

"I've been up all night. I can't sleep," Mathison told ABC's Good Morning America, where he was a regular correspondent for many years. "I've lost my home and everything that I own. I have this hoodie and a pair of pants and two pairs of sneakers left. That's it."

Mathison enrolled at McGill in 1989 and completed a degree in civil engineering in 1993. He earned Academic All-Canadian honours while playing three seasons of varsity hoops, from 1989 to 1992. The 6-foot-1 forward scored 277 career points and pulled down 130 rebounds in 41 regular season games. He served as a tri-captain in his final season, along with Bruce Bird and Keith Driscoll.

Born in Sarnia, Ont., Mathison was raised in Thornhill, Ont., where he attended Thornlea secondary school. He overcame a crippling bone disease during his childhood years and went on to become an accomplished athlete in multiple sports and later served as a spokesperson for Paralympic Games.

Mathison went on to a modeling career and soon found his niche in acting. From 1998 to 2011, he was on the soap opera "All My Children", playing a character named Ryan Lavery, a smart, slick-talking, sexy con man. In 1999, he received the Soap Opera Digest Award for outstanding male newcomer.  He has received Daytime Emmy Award nominations in 2002 and 2005 for outstanding supporting actor. In 2000, Mathison was named by People magazine as one of America's 100 Most Eligible Bachelors. He has had numerous acting gigs on TV and in a number of Hollywood movies, with stints on CSI, the Drew Carey Show and Entertainment Tonight, among others. He competed on ABC's Dancing with the Stars in 2007 and has worked or hosted numerous major award shows, including the Oscars, Grammys and Golden Globes. Since 2021, he has also portrayed the role of Drew Cain on General Hospital.
