TRACK & FIELD: Martlets strike gold twice en route to finishing second at McGill Team Challenge

MONTREAL – Vanessa Lu Langley and Marie Billaud each won gold and silver medals as McGill finished second of 16 schools in the women's division of the 28th annual McGill Team Challenge, a two-day track and field meet, that concluded Saturday, at the Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse, on the campus of the downtown university.

Billed as the largest indoor track meet in Canada, the event featured 702 athletes from 48 teams and clubs, including universities from three of the four conferences in U SPORTS.

Only one meet record and one fieldhouse mark fell over the weekend, both on the men's side. The Martlets produced nine podium finishes, including four silver medals and three bronzes.

Lu Langley, a chemical engineering senior from Ottawa, merited the Martlets only individual gold, winning the 60-metre hurdles in 8.74 seconds, just fractions shy of the school record (8.55). She also ran the second leg of the silver-medal winning 4x200 relay, which crossed the finish line in 1:42.72.

Billaud, first-year doctorate student in chemical engineering who hails from Angers, France, rans the anchor leg of the winning 4x800 relay (9:27.50) and collected silver by anchoring the 4x400. She also finished seventh in the 600m race.

Other members of her winning relay were Abigail McIntosh, a physiology senior from Toronto, Arowyn Fitzpatrick, a chemical engineering sophomore from the rural town of Mono, Ont., and Abene Glasglow, an Arts freshman from Toronto.

Donna Ntambue, who holds the McGill 60m sprint record (7.32 seconds), produced a bronze medal finish in that race with a time of 7.58. She was surpassed on the podium by Laval's Sarah Dulude-Bellavance (7.48) and Julia Vallee of the Montreal Carabins (7.56). Ntambue was also part of the aforementioned 4x200 that finished second.

Laval, which won the women's division for the second straight year, now has four meet titles under their belts. The Rouge et Or amassed 155 points to finish comfortably ahead of the second-place Martlets (118). Sherbrooke was third (86), followed by Montreal (79), Ottawa (31), Moncton (28), Queen's (22), Memorial (20), Laurentian (18), Carleton (16), ETS (13), Concordia (10), UQAC (8), College Militaire Royale (3), UQTR (1) and Western (0).

It was a great weekend for the McGill track program, other than the inability to meet the lofty qualifying standards for the national championships in Windsor, Mar. 6-8. Four competitions remain to qualify, beginning with the Middlebury "Field and Track" Meet in Vermont (Feb. 8), followed by the Last Chance Invitational at Carleton (Feb. 14-15) and the RSEQ championships (Feb. 21-22) in Sherbrooke, where all gold medalists automatically qualify.
