MONTREAL -- The 28th annual McGill Team Challenge track and field meet is scheduled for this Friday and Saturday (Jan. 24-25) at Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse on the campus of McGill University. The event, billed as the largest indoor track meet in Canada, is expected to feature 48 teams and clubs, including 16 universities, 702 athletes and 1,136 total entries, all hoping to reach personal bests or qualifying standards for the U SPORTS national championships in Windsor, March 6-8.
Tomlinson Fieldhouse is located inside the Sir Arthur Currie gymnasium, located at 475 Avenue des Pins ouest. Tickets, available
online only, will be $15 for a day pass and $25 for a weekend pass. Both Friday's and Saturday's events will be
streamed for free with ambient sound (i.e. no play-by-play).
Among the institutions registered at the McGill Team Challenge are nine out of the Quebec-based RSEQ conference, five from the OUA and two from the AUS. The university teams expected to attend the meet from the RSEQ are McGill, Concordia, Montreal, Laval, Sherbrooke, UQTR, UQAC, Collège Militaire Royale (St. Jean) and École de technologie supérieure (ETS). Representing the OUA conference is Carleton, Ottawa, Laurentian, Western and Queen's. Traveling from the maritime-based AUS conference is Moncton and Memorial University of Newfoundland.

MEET SCHEDULE
INDIVIDUAL NATIONAL RANKINGS
The highest profile races of the Team Challenge are usually the 60m, 300m, 600m and 1000m, while the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relays, are arguably the most exciting events to watch.
Friday's schedule features heats and preliminaries all afternoon with finals in the evening. The schedule technically begins at 12 noon (Eastern) with the heptathlon and pentathlon, as well as the 1000m and 3000m distance races. Field events that follow on Day 1 include the triple jump and pole vault.
The official opening ceremonies are scheduled for 5:30 p.m., followed by heats for the 60m dash, where the women will be chasing both the meet record (7.29 seconds) and the Fieldhouse standard (7.29).
For the McGill women, all eyes will be on
Donna Ntambue, an economics senior from Montreal, who will be looking to break her school record of 7.38 seconds in the 60m sprint, set at the Team Challenge in 2023.
The men's 60m heats are slated for 6:30 p.m. and the marks to aim for are 6.71 (meet record) and the 6.56 (Fieldhouse record). The 60m finals are tentatively set to begin at 8 p.m., followed by the 800m and the 4x800 and 4x200 relays. The evening session is expected to conclude by 9 p.m.
On the men's side, a race to watch is the 4x800 relay since McGill broke a nine-year-old school record last week in Ottawa. That foursome posted a time of 7:37.39 and was composed of
Sean Adams, a geography junior from State College, Penn.
Ben Gates, a mechanical engineering freshman from Regina, Sask., ran the second leg, followed by
Samuel Hepworth, a psychology sophomore from Montreal, and
Devin Chapple, a management senior from Toronto.
Saturday's schedule begins with long jump and the 60m hurdles at 9:30 a.m. , then the 600m, high jump and women's shot put all before noon. After a lunch break, the meet will resume at 12:40 p.m. with the 300m, triple jump, pole vault, high jump, the heptathlon final event (1000m), 1500m and men's shot put, concluding with the highlight race, the 4x400m relay, which is scheduled for 4:10 p.m.
This year, McGill features a team roster of 99 athletes -- the program's largest in school history -- featuring 54 women and 45 men. The geographical breakdown includes 69 athletes from across Canada, 16 from the U.S., three from France, and three from England, plus one apiece from Germany, Luxembourg, Monaco, Trinidad, Panama, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and French Polynesia. The breakdown of Canadians has 21 from Quebec, 35 from Ontario, nine from British Columbia, three from Manitoba and one from Saskatchewan.
