McGill grad Dianna Ros appointed basketball bench boss of Varsity Blues

MONTREAL – Dianna Ros, who led McGill to five basketball conference titles as a player and served as a full-time associate coach with the Martlets, has been appointed head coach of the University of Toronto women's program. She becomes the 20th bench boss in Varsity Blues history, dating back to 1920.

She joins a familiar face at U of T, as the men's team is coached by colleague Madhav "Muddy" Trivedi, who spent five years as an assistant coach with the McGill men's program, from 2013 to 2018.

Ros joins the Blues after two seasons as head coach of the Bishop's Gaiters, where she amassed an impressive 25-11 overall record, reaching the RSEQ championship final in both campaigns. She was honoured with the 2023 RSEQ coach of the year award, while her team at BU received five RSEQ major awards, six conference all-stars and two U SPORTS All-Canadians.

Following graduation from McGill with an undergraduate degree in rehabilitation science and a master's in physical therapy, Ros began her coaching journey as an assistant coach with Vanier College. After four seasons with the Cheetahs, she returned to McGill as a full-time associate coach, before making the leap to Bishop's as the bench boss in 2022.

"I'm so grateful and excited for the opportunity to join the Varsity Blues women's basketball program and its community," said Ros in a statement issued by U of T. "It's a program with a strong history of success and I can't wait to keep building on that. University of Toronto is known for its unwavering commitment to excellence and it is what makes it an appealing environment. I look forward to building relationships with everyone involved in our program. My priority will be to empower these young women to achieve their goals on-and-off the court and create a safe environment for them to develop, grow and compete in."

Ros has also coached with the Quebec provincial program, leading the under-17 girls to a national championship in 2023, and with Team Canada, serving as an assistant coach and performance analyst at the 2023 FIBA U-16 Americas championship.

As a player, Ros competed for College Montmorency in the Quebec CEGEP ranks before stepping up to U SPORTS competition with McGill. During her five-year career with the Martlets, she earned RSEQ rookie of the year, merited U SPORTS all-rookie status, earned second team all-star honours twice, and helped the Martlets to five straight appearances at the Final Eight national championship tournament, garnering silver in her senior season. She served as co-captain in her last two years at McGill and excelled academically garnering U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian honours. In 69 career regular season contests with the Martlets, the 5-foot-7 point-guard tallied a school record 235 assists in addition to 81 steals.

Additionally, she competed at the provincial level with Team Quebec, represented the province at the World Francophone Games in Nice, France. and represented McGill as a member of the Canadian national development squad at the 2013 FISU Summer Games in Kazan, Russia.
