MONTREAL – Alex Surprenant has been appointed head coach of the McGill University football team. He becomes the 22nd head coach in the history of a program that dates back to 1872.
 
Fluently bilingual, Surprenant had served the past four seasons on the Concordia Stingers coaching staff since being appointed as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2019. From 2013 to 2018, he served as head coach and offensive coordinator at College St. Jean in the Quebec-based CEGEP league, winning back-to-back Bol d'Or conference titles in 2014 and 2015, which resulted in the team being promoted to Division 1 in 2016.
 
"We are very excited about Alex joining our program and bringing a wealth of experience, knowledge on both sides of the football," said Daniel Méthot, director of sport programs at McGill. "A creative thinker who is oriented on teaching, communicating and developing young talented student-athletes were key attributes we were looking for in this important process. His astute knowledge of future candidates, his recruitment approach and his past recruiting successes spoke volumes for what our program intends to address going forward. We are eager to help him build a solid coaching staff and bring McGill football at the forefront once again."
 
The new McGill bench boss also brings coaching experience with both Football Quebec (2013 - present) and Football Canada (2014-2018). In three seasons as the head coach and offensive co-ordinator at the Division 2 level, his St. Jean Géants racked up a 23-4 regular season record while leading the league in scoring each year.
 
"I am deeply honored and excited to step into the role of head coach at McGill," said Surprenant, a 38-year-old native of Farnham, Que., who currently resides in nearby St. Jean sur Richelieu.  "This opportunity is not just a career milestone for me but a profound responsibility to carry forward the legacy of excellence that McGill represents, both academically and athletically. My journey in football has been filled with invaluable lessons, challenges, and triumphs, all of which have prepared me to lead this distinguished program. I look forward to this new chapter, building strong relationships within the University, the football community across Canada and with our alumni."
 
During his playing days, Surprenant was an all-star defensive back with both College St. Jean (2005) and Université Laval (2009). He graduated from Laval in 2009 with a degree in business administration and earned Academic All-Canadian honours while winning four consecutive Dunsmore Cup league titles and a pair of Vanier Cup national championships (2006 and 2008).
 
Surprenant replaces Ronald Hilaire, who coached at McGill for the past 10 years.

McGill annonce la nomination d'Alex Surprenant à titre d'entraîneur-chef de son équipe de football

MONTRÉAL - Alex Surprenant a été nommé entraîneur-chef de l'équipe de football de l'Université McGill. Il devient le 22e entraîneur-chef de l'histoire du programme dont les débuts remontent à 1872.
 
Parfaitement bilingue, Surprenant a fait partie du personnel d'entraîneurs des Stingers de l'Université Concordia au cours des quatre dernières saisons à titre de coordonnateur offensif et précédemment comme entraîneur des quarts-arrière en 2019. De 2013 à 2018, il a été entraîneur-chef et coordonnateur offensif des Géants du Cégep de Saint-Jean au sein du réseau collégial du RSEQ, remportant deux titres consécutifs du Bol d'Or en 2014 et 2015, ce qui a permis à l'équipe d'être promue en Division 1 en 2016.
 
« Nous sommes très heureux qu'Alex se joigne à notre programme et il amène avec lui une riche expérience et de vastes connaissances tant sur le plan offensif que défensif », a déclaré Daniel Méthot, directeur des programmes sportifs de McGill. « Un entraîneur créatif qui est orienté vers l'enseignement, la communication et le développement de jeunes étudiants athlètes talentueux étaient des attributs clés que nous recherchions dans ce processus important. Ses connaissances approfondies du bassin d'étudiants athlètes potentiels, son approche en recrutement et ses succès passés dans ce domaine témoigne de l'importance que nous allons y accorder à l'avenir. Nous sommes impatients de l'aider à mettre sur pied une équipe d'entraîneurs talentueux et de ramener le football de McGill à l'avant-scène. »
 
Le nouveau patron du banc des Redbirds possède également de l'expérience en tant qu'entraîneur au sein de Football Québec (2013 à ce jour) et de Football Canada (2014-2018). En trois saisons en tant qu'entraîneur-chef et coordonnateur offensif au niveau collégial de division 2, ses Géants de Saint-Jean ont cumulé une fiche impressionnante de 23-4 en saison régulière, tout en menant la ligue au chapitre des points marqués à chaque année.
 
« Je suis très honoré et très enthousiaste à l'idée de devenir entraîneur-chef à l'Université McGill », a déclaré Surprenant, 38 ans, originaire de Farnham (Québec) et résidant actuellement dans la ville voisine de Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. « Cette occasion n'est pas seulement un jalon dans ma carrière, mais une responsabilité profonde de poursuivre l'héritage d'excellence que McGill représente, tant sur le plan académique que sportif. Mon parcours en football a été rempli d'apprentissages, de défis et de triomphes inestimables, qui m'ont tous préparé à diriger ce programme prestigieux. J'ai hâte d'entamer ce nouveau chapitre et d'établir de solides relations au sein de l'Université, de la communauté du football québécois et canadien et avec nos nombreux anciens de McGill ».
 
À l'époque où il jouait, Surprenant a été un demi-défensif étoile au Cégep de Saint-Jean (2005) et à l'Université Laval (2009). Il a obtenu un diplôme en administration des affaires de l'Université Laval en 2009 et s'est mérité les honneurs de l'équipe académique canadienne tout en remportant quatre titres consécutifs de la Coupe Dunsmore et deux championnats nationaux de la Coupe Vanier (2006 et 2008).
 
Surprenant remplace Ronald Hilaire, qui a été entraîneur à McGill au cours des 10 dernières années.
