LAS VEGAS, NV -- Dr. Jean-Philippe Darche, a McGill University graduate (BSc '97) and football product, has scored a hat-trick of Super Bowl rings.
A former NFL long-snapper and all-star middle linebacker at McGill who remains in the record books as the school's all-time leader in tackles (272), Darche was spotted by television cameras, Sunday, situated on the Kansas City sideline. He was standing with a grim look behind quarterback Patrick Mahomes, moments before the star quarterback sparked a rally that guided KC to a 25-22 overtime win over San Francisco.
A team physician with the Chiefs, Darche previously won Super Bowl rings as part of the team's support staff at the 2020 and 2023 games in Miami and Glendale, Ariz., respectively. He was also on the losing side as part of the KC team staff at the 2021 event in Tampa.
The 48-year-old native of St-Laurent, Que., made his first Super Bowl appearance in 2006 as a player with the Seattle Seahawks, who dropped a 21-10 decision to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Detroit.
During his collegiate playing days, the six-foot, 242-pound Darche was a standout linebacker over five seasons at McGill, serving as a co-captain his final two while attending medical school. After being selected in the third round of the 1999 CFL draft by Toronto, Darche played one season with the Argonauts before signing with the Seahawks. The first of three McGill football products to play in the NFL, Darche played six seasons in Seattle before his final two NFL campaigns with Kansas City (2007-08). He spent two years in medical school during his last two seasons at McGill. After retiring from the NFL, he completed his medical degree at the University of Kansas.
Darche was followed in the NFL by McGillians Randy Chevrier (BEd '01) and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (MDCM 18'). Chevrier, an All-Canadiuan linebacker and long-snapper, was drafted in 2001 by Jacksonville and played for both Dallas (2001) and Cincinnati (2002). Duvernay-Tardif, an All-Canadian offensive lineman, was drafted in 2014 by Kansas City. He played for the Chiefs (2014-2020) -- winning the Super Bowl in 2020 -- and New York Jets (2021-2022).
