MONTREAL –
Dr. Mickey Moroz and
Julie Gardiner, both members of the McGill Sports Medicine Clinic, are among the U SPORTS mission staff's medical team headed to the 2025 FISU Winter World University Games in Torino, Italy, Jan. 13-23.
Other McGillians previously announced to represent Canada at the Games include hockey players
William Rouleau and
Mathieu Gagnon, along with Redbirds head coach
David Urquhart.
Dr. Moroz graduated from McGill's family medicine residency program in 2018 and joined the University's department of family medicine in 2019. He recently received the J. Donald Boudreau Mentorship Award, which recognizes a current or recent Osler Fellow who demonstrates excellent mentoring qualities, pedagogy, and attributes promoted by the Physicianship Program and the Physician Apprenticeship course. Dr. Moroz currently works with the McGill varsity sports teams and has expertise in using ultrasound guidance for clinical procedures, injections and for diagnostic purposes. He also supports Gymnastics Canada and Water Polo Canada out of the Institut National du Sport du Québec Sports Medicine Clinic. Last summer, he accompanied Team Canada to the Paris Olympic Games.
Gardiner, a native of Greenfield Park, Que., was appointed in 2017 as manager of the Clinic, a McGill-affiliated teaching site which offers sports medicine as a clinical rotation to medical residents, students and trainees from the University's faculty of medicine and health sciences. Gardiner earned a bachelor of science, majoring in biology, from Université de Sherbrooke in 1994, followed by a physiotherapy degree from Université Laval in 1998. A long-time physiotherapist in the Montreal downtown area, she served as head physiotherapist at l'Institut national du sport du Québec from 2012 to 2017. She has served as a consultant with Athletics Canada (1999-2008), Freestyle Ski Canada (2003-2009) and Alpine Ski Canada (2003-2005), in addition to a six-year stint as head therapist with Les Grand Ballets Canadiens de Montreal.

Dr. Ryan Shields, who has been tabbed as chief medical officer for the games. "University athletes are exceptional representatives for our country and our medical team, including physicians, athletic therapists, physiotherapists, and mental health professionals will be doing everything we can to make sure they are physically and mentally ready perform at their best."
Carleton's
Nadine Smith has been appointed as chief therapist.
"I am looking forward to working with this fantastic team of medical professionals," said Smith, who will be working her fifth FISU Games, and second as chief therapist. "We are going to provide the best care and give every Canadian athlete an opportunity to perform to their optimum. We can't wait!"
