MONTREAL –
Eric Uba, a McGill University graduate, has been selected to play for Germany at the 96th Spengler Cup, a six-team men's hockey tournament, Dec. 26-31, in Davos, Switzerland.
The 24-year-old from Kitchener, Ont., will become the third McGill product to play in the Spengler Cup, following in the wake of McGill Sports Hall of fame inductees
Tim Iannone (BA '90) and
Martin Raymond (BEd'90, MEd '96), who won gold (1987) and bronze (1991), respectively, for Team Canada.
After graduating with management degree last spring, the six-foot, 201-pound right-winger signed with Mannheim of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, more commonly known as the DEL. Uba has been loaned to bolster the lineup of the Straubing Tigers, the top DEL club that will be representing Germany at the Swiss tourney. Other competing teams include Canada, Finland (HC Kärpät Oulu), Czechia (HC Dynamo Pardubice) and a pair of Swiss teams, namely HC Fribourg-Gottéron and HC Davos, the host team. Davos has won 16 Spengler Cup titles, sharing the record with Canada for most Cups won.
Uba was recruited to McGill in 2020 after playing at the major junior level in the Ontario Hockey League, where he skated for the Flint Firebirds and Guelph Storm. After enrolling at McGill during the cancelled COVID season, Uba went on to play three seasons with the Redbirds. In 105 games overall, he tallied 57 goals and 103 points with 109 penalty minutes. He earned OUA East second-team all-star honours last season and won the OUA playoff scoring title with an 8-3-11 record in six contests. He is one of 105 McGill hockey products that has gone on to play at the pro level, including nine who have skated in the NHL.
