OTTAWA –
Martin Laval, a native of France, scored a game-high 18 points and broke a school record as McGill opened defence of their league championship by clobbering Carleton 77-3 in the RSEQ men's rugby opener at Ravens Field in the nation's capital, Sunday.
Seven different members of the Redbirds tallied tries, including two apiece for sophomore
Alexandre Laurendeau of Ormstown, Que., and
Evan Tennant, a senior from Kirkland, Que.
Laval, a 5-foot-11, 182-pound outside centre, tallied 18 points to account for 24 per cent of McGill's scoring in the game. He established a single-game team record, converting all nine tries scored by the Redbirds. That erased the school's regular season mark of seven conversions set by
Monty Weatherall (Sept. 19/22). It also surpassed the team's overall record of eight conversions, accomplished in a playoff game, shared by
Matt De Graff (Oct. 31/04) and
Cameron Perrin (Nov. 11/12).
Other try scorers for the Redbirds included senior
Ferreol Amigues and
Jules Tastet, both natives of France, in addition to freshman
Ken Braman of Edina, Minn., and
Will Storey of Ottawa.
Replying for the Ravens was
Maxwell Magnusson, who tallied three points on a penalty-kick.
Carleton (0-1) travels to Concordia (0-1) for a matinee on Sept. 17.
McGill (1-0) earned a bonus point in the RSEQ standings, which goes to teams that either score at least four tries or lose by seven points (or less). The Redbirds return to action on Saturday (Sept. 16) in a 3 p.m. kickoff at Percival Molson Stadium against
École de technologie supérieure, more commonly known as the ETS Piranhas, a team that won its opener 40-7 over the Montreal Carabins on Saturday.
