MONTREAL - The Tampa Bay Lightning announced on Monday that Daniel Jacob (BEd '05), a former McGill University defenceman and assistant coach, has been appointed to the coaching staff of their American Hockey League affiliate in Syracuse.

Jacob, a 42-year-old native of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., was named along with new Syracuse Crunch head coach Joel Bouchard. The duo previously worked together with the AHL's San Diego Gulls and Laval Rocket as well as the QMJHL's Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, where they guided the team to back-to-back President's Cup Final appearances.

"We are very pleased and excited to have Joel and Dan join our organization," Lightning assistant general manager and GM of the Crunch Stacy Roest said in a statement released by the team. "They are people of great talent that bring with them a wealth of experience. They are bright and passionate hockey coaches and we feel that our players in Syracuse will greatly benefit from their guidance. We look forward to working with them on providing our players and fans a Crunch team they can be proud of."

Jacob, who graduated in 2005 with a kinesiology degree, is the second McGill grad currently employed by Tampa, joining Mathieu Darche, the team's director of hockey operations.

Jacob is among seven McGill hockey grads to have worked behind an AHL bench, a group that previously included George Burnett (Cape Breton), Mike Babcock (Cincinnati), Guy Boucher (Hamilton), Martin Raymond (Hamilton, Syracuse), Jamie Kompon (Baltimore) and David Urquhart (San Diego).

While coaching at the junior level, Jacob also worked with Hockey Canada, serving behind the bench at the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and he was part of the coaching staff for the gold medal-winning men's national under-17 team at the 2017 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

Prior to joining the Armada, Jacob was an assistant coach at McGill from 2010 to 2014, including the team's national championship campaign in 2011-12.

As a player, he had a short stint with the QMJHL's Drummondville Voltigeurs before patrolling the blueline for five seasons of university hockey with McGill from 2000 to 2005. The 6-foot-6 rearguard was appointed team captain in his fifth season when he also merited OUA first-team all-star status. During his time in the Canadian collegiate ranks with McGill, he recorded 16 goals and 21 assists with 369 penalty minutes in 108 regular season contests.

After university, he sported the colours of the AHL's San Antonio Rampage, Austria's Innsbruck HC and Sweden's Kristianstads IK before closing out his playing career with four seasons in Serbia, from 2006 to 2010, including the IIHF world championships in both 2009 and 2010.

Jacob also served as director of a local hockey school for four years and took part in CBC's Making The Cut reality-TV show in 2004.
