MONTREAL – The schedule has been released for the 151st year of football at McGill University. The Redbirds will open with a preseason home game against longtime rival Queen's on Aug. 18. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium.
The exhibition affair with Queen's renews a long-standing rivalry that dates back to a 10-1 McGill victory in 1886. The Gaels lead the all-time head-to-head series against McGill with a 102-75-5 record overall, including a 10-8 mark in the last 18 matchups. They crossed paths in preseason play last year with Queen's rallying for a late 19-12 victory in Kingston, Ont.
The Redbirds will open their 2023 regular season schedule on Aug. 26 with a road game against the Montreal Carabins, before hosting Sherbrooke in the team's official home opener on Sept. 1. Next on tap is a trip to Quebec City to play Laval (Sept. 9), followed by a cross-town confrontation at Concordia (Sept. 16). After a bye-week, McGill will host three consecutive contests, facing Laval (Sept. 30), Montreal (Oct. 6) and Concordia (Oct. 20) in the Homecoming Game for the 54th edition of the Shaughnessy Cup. The regular season concludes at Sherbrooke (Oct. 28), followed by the conference semifinals (Nov. 4), the Dunsmore Cup league title game (Nov. 11), the Uteck Bowl national semifinal hosted by the RSEQ champion (Nov. 18) and the Vanier Cup championship (Nov. 25) in Kingston, Ont.
Information about McGill season tickets will be announced at a later date.
An RSEQ university football game of the week will be televised on TVA Sports for a ninth consecutive season. The Quebec-based French-language network, which is available on most cable TV providers across the country, is scheduled to broadcast 11 contests this year, prior to the national semifinal Bowl games. The Vanier Cup will air on
CBC Television (English) and
TVA Sports (French) and be available on both broadcasters' digital platforms. One McGill game is currently scheduled to be televised, at Laval on Sept. 9, but the Redbirds are tentatively slated to have their final league game broadcast from Sherbrooke if it has a key bearing on the playoff scenario.
"The RSEQ is pleased to be able to count on this major and trusted partner for the 2023 university football season, and to promote all of the network's activities," said
Gustave Roel, president and CEO of the RSEQ, in a press release."
Veteran play-by-play broadcaster
Denis Casavant returns along with colour analyst
Charles-Antoine Sinotte, a former All-Canadian receiver at McGill. The TV broadcast schedule begins with a Laval-Sherbrooke matchup on Aug. 25 at 7 p.m.
"TVA Sports is proud of its partnership with the RSEQ and of presenting university football since 2015 ," said
Louis-Philippe Neveu, general manager of the network. "Since the very beginning of this agreement, football fans have been there to see the prowess of local student-athletes, and the enthusiasm is only increasing."
