U SPORTS TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Beaudet bags bronze, breaks record at Nationals

SASKATOON – Matthew Beaudet won bronze and broke a school record to pace the McGill men's track and field team at the U SPORTS indoor national championships over the weekend. The three-day competition wrapped up at the Saskatoon Fieldhouse, Saturday.

Beaudet, an electrical engineering junior  from the Montreal region of Notre Dame de Grace, was the only McGill male to reach the podium over the weekend. His third-place finish in the 3,000-metre race was clocked in eight minutes, 9.62 seconds, destroying the team record of 8:18.75 that he established at the McGill Team Challenge in late January.

Beaudet's bronze was the first medal at Nationals by a member of the Redbirds since 2016, when the 4x200 relay won bronze (3:17.45) with a foursome that included Ryan McClelland, Ethan Wilkinson, Vincent Parent-Pichette and Javier Montalvo.

Seeded first entering the 1,500m, Beaudet finished eighth (4:05.28), compared to a fourth-place in that event at last year's Nationals (3:50.64). He also anchored the 4x800 relay (7:52.69) which placed 11th overall. That foursome also included Sebastian Danson, a computer science senior from Toronto, Jules Gueguen, an NCAA transfer and economics major from France, along with Markus Geiger, a management junior from Toronto

McGill, which qualified six women and four men for this year's meet, finished 16th of 27 schools on the women's side and 24th in the men's division.

Guelph swept both banners. The Gryphons cruised to the men's title with 123 points overall, finishing ahead of Toronto (55.5), Manitoba (55), Western (46.5) and Montreal (42.5) to round out the top five. The Carabins were the top finisher from the RSEQ, as conference champion Laval ended up ninth with 28.5 points. Other RSEQ teams included Sherbrooke (15th; 14 pts), Ottawa (18th; 10 pts), UQTR (21st; 8 pts) and Carleton (26th; 1 pt.).

All gold medalists earn first-team All-Canadian honours, while a silver medal merits second-team status.
