TROIS-RIVIERES, QUE –
Isabel Sarty of Halifax, N.S., won six gold medals and was named swimmer of the meet as the McGill University women's swim team won the RSEQ conference championship, a three-day short-course competition at UQTR that concluded on Sunday.
McGill also won the men's banner and the combined title to become the first program in the history of the Quebec conference to sweep all three banners for a third consecutive year.
McGill took home three of the major conference awards on the women's side. Aside from the previously mentioned athlete of the year honours (Sarty),
Naomie Lo merited the leadership and community service award and
Peter Carpenter was named coach of the year. The only prize that eluded the Martlets was the top rookie, which went to Laval's
Danika Ethier.
The Martlets won all five league meets to easily outdistance the field en route to capturing the women's title for the 21st time since the Quebec league was formed in 1972. At the championship meet, the Martlets finished the weekend with 33 appearances on the podium, including a stunning 16 of the 21 gold medals handed out. They added nine silvers and eight bronzes. The Martlets also broke three school records, namely
Isabel Sarty in both the 50 free (0:25.26) and 100 free (0:55.10), along with
Elizabeth Ling in the 50 back (0:27.95).
Sarty, a 23-year-old master's student in neuroscience, was also named conference swimmer of the year. She scored a meet-high 75 points for the team over her six events and registered the best swim with 758 points on the FINA scale in the 100 free. The 5-foot-7 freestyle specialist won three individual gold medals: 50 free (0:25.26), 100 free (0:55.10) and 200 free (2:02.73), in addition to three relay golds: 4x50 free, (1:43.46), 4x100 free (3:46.69) and the 4x100 medley (4:09.18).
During her undergrad years at Dalhousie University, Sarty previously won two AUS conference swimmer of the year awards in 2019 and 2020.
The Martlets swept the podium in the 400 and 800 freestyles, the 400 individual medley, the 200 butterfly and the 200 backstroke.
Sarty was one of 10 Martlets to merit first-team all-star honours, which is awarded to all gold medalists. That group included senior
Daphne Danyluk, a master's student in experimental medicine from Rivière-des-Prairies, Que., who won won five golds and one silver. Her top performances included a first-place finish in the 400 IM in 4:50.33 and 100 back in 1:01.51, in addition to both the 4x100 freestyle and 4x100 medley relays.
Naomie Lo of Toronto, also won five gold medals over the weekend. The 20-year-old software engineering sophomore finished first in the 400 free (4:18.33), 800 free (8:49.97) and 200 fly (2:16.53), as well as the 4x200 freestyle and 4x100 medley relays.
Rounding out McGill's group of gold medal winning all-stars is junior

Iris Tinmouth, a freshman from Comox, B.C.,, earned second-team all-star status for posting a silver-medal performance.
Each gold medalist automatically qualified for national championships in Victoria, B.C., but most of McGill's group had already qualified earlier this season. The only addition to the 18 women heading to Nationals is
Hana Mollin, a management junior from Schaumburg, Illinois.
The Martlets racked up a whopping 1,017 points in the meet. Ottawa was second with 639, followed by Laval (511.5), Montreal (330.5), Sherbrooke (179) and host UQTR (41). Fifty per cent of the points scored counted towards the final standings, which includes points from the previous four meets.
