McGill women extend win streak to 19 consecutive conference swim meets

TROIS-RIVIERES – The McGill Martlets swim team won five of 13 races en route to capturing the women's division at the fourth University Cup meet of the season, Saturday, at the Centre CAPS, a short-course pool on the campus of the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.

It extended their school record to 19 consecutive RSEQ conference meets won by the McGill women, dating back to a second-place finish five years ago on Jan. 18, 2020 at Quebec City.

The Martlets collected five gold medals, seven silvers and six bronzes en route to registering 621 points to finish first of six schools. They were well ahead of second-place Ottawa (288), followed by the Montreal Carabins (263), Laval (184), Sherbrooke (79) and UQTR (60).

Laval led the pack with six gold medals and other the two remaining golds going to Ottawa and Montreal.

"This was our biggest (points margin) win of the year despite us not winning as many races as we have at other meets," said McGill head coach Peter Carpenter.  "Our depth really came through with many races seeing us place."

Laval's Raphaelle Tremblay was the top scorer with 589 points to earn female swimmer-of-the-meet honours, based on FINA points.

She edged out McGill's Emilia Mastromatteo, who tallied 570.5 points while collecting a pair of gold medals, one silver and a bronze. The 20-year-old science junior from Kenora, Ont., won the 50-metre breaststroke in 32.25 seconds and swam leadoff on the winning 4x100 medley relay (4:12.12).

Joining her on that relay was Naomie Lo, Elizabeth Ling and Valentina Kolytchev.

Ling also won the 50 free in 26.00 and added silver (50 breast) and bronze (4x100 free) medals.

Lo was the third member of the Martlets to post a double golden performance adding the 100 butterfly (1:02.51) to her list of victories.

Rounding out the golden girls was Iris Tinmouth, who finished first in the grueling 800 free (8:53.09) beating her closest competitor by almost 10 seconds.

Next on the schedule is the RSEQ championship meet hosted by the Montreal Carabins, Feb. 14-16.
