MONTREAL – Senior
Elizabeth Ling of Calgary, Alta., was named athlete of the meet with six gold medals, while
Naomie Lo of Toronto collected five golds and broke a school record as the No. 4 ranked McGill University women's swim team coasted to the RSEQ intercollegiate championship, Sunday, to conclude a three-day competition held at the CEPSUM pool on the campus of Universite de Montreal.
It was the fifth consecutive women's title for McGill and 23rd provincial banner since the Quebec conference was formed in 1971-72. The McGill program also won its fifth consecutive RSEQ combined title, which incorporates all the points scored from both the men's and women's teams.
The Martlets registered 996 points to win their 20th consecutive conference meet dating back to 2020. Ottawa finished second (734), followed by Montreal (508), Laval (364), Sherbrooke (145) and UQTR (173). The points scored counted for 50 per cent towards the team's final standings calculated from the five meets that make up the Coupe Universitaire series.
The McGill women broke one school record and produced 28 podiums at the championship meet, collecting 13 gold medals in 21 events, including all five relays, in addition to seven silvers and eight bronzes. The domination was remarkable, given that the team was missing
Emilia Mastromatteo, who was kept out of the pool for medical reasons and was in the running for swimmer of the year in the RSEQ conference.
Their impressive totals for the five league meets combined include 38 golds, 30 silvers and 30 bronzes. The Martlets also added three new qualifiers upping their tally to 19 over the season (one over the maximum) who have met the standard for the U SPORTS championship in Toronto, Mar. 6-8. The new qualifiers include junior
Jenna Wall (200 breaststroke) of North Bay, Ont., sophomore
Beatrice Weiss-Reid (800 freestyle) of Halifax and
Zoe Krisko (100 & 200 backstroke), a sophomore from Montreal.
Ling, a 22-year-old civil engineering major, became the first McGillian to win six gold medals at the championship meet since
Isabel Sarty accomplished the feat two years ago. The 5-foot-4 middle distance specialist won the 50 free (0:25.72), the 50 back (0:28.76) and the 100 back (0:55.77), in addition to three winning relays: the 4x50 free (1:43.75), the 4x100 free (3:48.48) and the 4x100 IM (4:09.82).
The Martlets also merited two of the four major conference awards, including the RSEQ Leadership & Citizenship honour, which went to
Naomie Lo, a 22-year-old software engineering senior, She established a school record in the
200 butterfly over the weekend, winning the race in 2:13.98, which surpassed her own previous mark of 2:14.51 set last year. Her other golden performances were accomplished in the 100 fly (1:02.43), the 400 free (4:18.56), the 4x100 IM (4:09.82) and 4x200 free (8:21.25). Lo also won silver in the 200 free.
"To get three new qualifiers is incredible," said McGill head coach
Peter Carpenter, who was named RSEQ women's program coach of the year for the sixth time. "With the team dealing with some very unfortunate injury and health concerns it will get us to a near full team roster heading to Toronto for Nationals. Perhaps the most heartwarming moments in my career at McGill have come in the minutes after a new qualification. The raw emotion from the swimmer, but especially from their teammates makes this job so special."
McGill's other gold medals were won by
Maya McGhan (4x50 free, 4x100 free, 4x200 free),
Nathalie Day (50 fly, 4x50 IM, 4x100 IM),
Iris Tinmouth (800 free, 4x200 free),
Stella Barsalou (4x50 free, 4x100 free),
Gretta Zapparoli (4x50 free, 4x50 IM),
Chloe Cooper-Kelly (4x100 IM),
Emilie De Chazal (4x200 free),
Jenna Wall (4x50 IM),
Beatrice Weiss-Reid (4x100 free) and
Melanie Di Maria (4x50 IM).
All gold medalists automatically merit RSEQ first team all-star honours, while silver medalists earn second-team status.
