Martlets show promise, but fall short in rugby opener


MONTREAL -- Katie Locke scored a pair of tries and Michelle St. Laurent added 14 points on seven conversions as the visiting Bishop's Gaiters beat McGill 45-0 in the RSEQ women's rugby opener at Percival Molson Stadium, Sunday.

The Gaiters, who only led 7-0 at halftime, exploded for six converted tries in the second stanza.

Rounding out the scoring, with one try apiece, was Zenith Leroux, Erika Scott , Isabella Van Dystadt-Aguair, Evodia Mbonihankuye and Myriam Elkas.

The young Martlets squad featured a 25-member dress roster composed of 16 freshmen, six sophomores, one junior and two seniors.

McGill will head to the nation's capital on Sept. 9 to face the Carleton Ravens (1-0).
