McGill's McGinnis masterful, pots five goals as lacrosse Redbirds oust Ottawa

MONTREAL -- Cameron McGinnis of Scarborough, Ont., scored five goals to lead the McGill men's lacrosse team to a 9-4 victory over Ottawa at Percival Molson Stadium, Sunday.

It was the second straight victory for the Redbirds, who improved to 2-1 in league play, while the Gee-Gees remained winless at 0-3.

McGill led 5-0 after the first quarter but slipped into low gear the rest of the way, winning the second stanza 1-0. The third quarter was even at 1-1 and Ottawa won the final period 3-2.

"It was a good weekend for the team but I was disappointed with our performance today," said McGill head coach Nicolas Soubry. "Once we had a five-goal lead, the guys kind of put it in cruise control and they weren't there mentally as much as I wanted them to be. We need to be mentally tougher than that."

McGinnis, a six-foot, 195-pound attacker, was a one-man show, scoring the game's first four goals in a 15-minute span. The 21-year-old kinesiology senior tallied his fifth marker early in the third quarter to put his troops ahead 7-1.

"McGinnis, is one of our captains and really led by example today," Soubry said. "He was very vocal in terms of stepping up to make plays and trying to push the guys. That's the type of our leadership that we need with this young team."

McGill's remaining goals were scored by four different players.  Patrick Aber, who exploded for six markers on Saturday, added one. The others went to Chris Parkinson, Alex Cowgill and Mark Symon.

Connecting for the Gee-Gees was Seamus O'Connell with a pair, Michael Goegan and Steven Ainsworth.

Joseph Boehm started in net for McGill and collected the win, saving eight of nine shots. He was replaced at the 43:48 mark by freshman Henry Komosa, who conceded three goals on six shots over the final 16 minutes.

At the opposite end of the field, Ottawa starter Evan Fox went the distance and took the loss, allowing all nine goals.

Up next for McGill (2-1) will be a key confrontation against first-place Bishop's (4-0) in Lennoxville on Thursday (Sept. 29) at 8:30 p.m., followed by the team's first annual "Legacy Game" versus Queen's (0-2) on Sept. 30 in an 8 p.m. start at Molson Stadium.
