MONTREAL — John Miraglia netted a hat-trick and Mark Symon scored at 2:40 of sudden-death overtime as the McGill Redbirds pulled off a stunning 11-10 comeback win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees in a Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association playoff thriller Sunday at Percival Molson Stadium.

The top-seeded Redbirds rallied from a 10-6 deficit late in the third quarter with five unanswered goals, including Symon's winner, to eliminate the sixth-seeded Gee-Gees and punch their ticket to the CUFLA Baggataway Cup championship tournament in Brampton, Ont., Nov. 7–9.

McGill trailed 10-6 with just over two minutes left in the third before goals by Massimo Thauvette, Torsten Blodgett, Rowan Birrell and Miraglia — who completed his hat trick with 2:31 remaining — forced overtime. Miraglia's equalizer came off a pinpoint feed from Dylan Fenton.

Freshman goaltender Brennan Visokey of Glen Rock, N.J., preserved the tie in dramatic fashion, robbing Ottawa's Julien Belair from point-blank range with about two seconds left in regulation.

"Brennan may be a rookie but plays well beyond his years and he made key saves, especially late," said McGill head coach Nicolas Soubry. "He was clearing the ball very well, he's playing with the poise of a four-year starter. We have a young group but the future is kind of now for us and it's it's great to see that we have someone we can trust in a real key position."

In the extra frame, McGill's pressure paid off when Birrell intercepted a high breakout pass from Ottawa defender John McKinney in Gee-Gees territory, then fed Symon, an economics senior, who spun around a defender and fired past Finn Harapiak for the win.

Miraglia led McGill with three goals and an assist. Symon and Blodgett added two goals apiece, while Birrell contributed a goal and three assists. Fenton, Thauvette and Joshua Jewell rounded out the scoring.

"I'm happy for Symon to score that winner because it's been a bit of a difficult year for him. He started the off with an injury and it took him some time to get back into a rhythm and be completely ready to go. We decided to be patient with him and it paid off in a game like today. We are really lucky to have a senior like him who's been in big games. He's been through the pressure of playing at two previous Baggataway Cup championships, so I felt like there our entire attack group showed poise and didn't panic when we were down especially so with Symon. He kept things simple when he had the ball and he made a really nice play on that breakaway.

Rayne Lang paced Ottawa with three goals and two assists. Teammates Ben Kromer, Samuel Ouellette and Julien Belair each had a goal and an assist.

Ottawa outshot McGill 23–21. Visokey made 13 saves for the win, while Harapiak turned aside 10 shots in defeat.

"It was the first playoff game for a lot of our players and I think we had some jitters," Soubrey noted.. "We were just overthinking it early on, trying to do too much. You kind of grip your stick a little bit more and you try harder instead of trying smarter and I felt like that was a real big factor."

MONTRÉAL — John Miraglia a réussi un tour du chapeau et Mark Symon a marqué à 2 min 40 s de la prolongation en mort subite, permettant aux Redbirds de McGill de remporter une victoire spectaculaire 11-10 contre les Gee-Gees d'Ottawa lors d'un match éliminatoire palpitant de la Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association dimanche au stade Percival Molson.

Les Redbirds, tête de série, ont comblé un déficit de 10-6 à la fin du troisième quart grâce à cinq buts sans riposte, dont celui de Symon, éliminant ainsi les Gee-Gees, sixième tête de série, et décrochant leur billet pour le tournoi de championnat de la Coupe Baggataway de la CUFLA qui se tiendra à Brampton, en Ontario, du 7 au 9 novembre.

McGill était mené 10-6 à un peu plus de deux minutes de la fin du troisième quart-temps, mais les buts de Massimo Thauvette, Torsten Blodgett, Rowan Birrell et Miraglia — qui a réalisé un tour du chapeau à 2:31 de la fin — ont forcé la prolongation. Le but égalisateur de Miraglia est venu d'une passe précise de Dylan Fenton.

Le gardien de but recrue Brennan Visokey, de Glen Rock, au New Jersey, a préservé l'égalité de façon spectaculaire en volant le but à Julien Belair, d'Ottawa, à bout portant, alors qu'il ne restait que deux secondes à jouer en temps réglementaire.

« Brennan est peut-être une recrue, mais il joue bien au-delà de son âge et il a effectué des arrêts décisifs, surtout en fin de match », a déclaré l'entraîneur-chef de McGill, Nicolas Soubry. « Il a très bien dégagé le ballon, il joue avec l'assurance d'un joueur titulaire depuis quatre ans. Nous avons un groupe jeune, mais l'avenir est en quelque sorte déjà là pour nous et c'est formidable de voir que nous avons quelqu'un en qui nous pouvons avoir confiance à un poste vraiment clé. »

En prolongation, la pression de McGill a porté ses fruits lorsque Birrell a intercepté une passe haute du défenseur d'Ottawa John McKinney dans le territoire des Gee-Gees, puis a fait une passe à Symon, un étudiant en économie, qui a contourné un défenseur et a tiré au-delà de Finn Harapiak pour remporter la victoire.

« Je suis heureux que Symon ait marqué le but de la victoire, car l'année a été un peu difficile pour lui. Il a commencé la saison avec une blessure et il lui a fallu du temps pour retrouver son rythme et être complètement prêt à jouer. Nous avons décidé d'être patients avec lui et cela a porté ses fruits dans un match comme celui d'aujourd'hui. Nous avons vraiment de la chance d'avoir un joueur senior comme lui qui a déjà participé à de grands matchs. Il a déjà connu la pression des deux précédentes finales de la Coupe Baggataway, et j'ai trouvé que toute notre ligne d'attaque avait fait preuve de sang-froid et n'avait pas paniqué lorsque nous étions menés, en particulier Symon. Il a su rester simple lorsqu'il avait le ballon et a réalisé un très beau jeu sur cette échappée.

Rayne Lang a mené Ottawa avec trois buts et deux passes décisives. Ses coéquipiers Ben Kromer, Samuel Ouellette et Julien Belair ont chacun marqué un but et réalisé une passe décisive.

Ottawa a dominé McGill 23-21 au nombre de tirs. Visokey a réalisé 13 arrêts pour la victoire, tandis que Harapiak a repoussé 10 tirs dans la défaite.

« C'était le premier match éliminatoire pour beaucoup de nos joueurs et je pense que nous étions un peu nerveux », a noté Soubrey. « Au début, nous avons trop réfléchi, nous avons essayé d'en faire trop. On serre un peu plus fort son bâton et on essaie de faire plus d'efforts au lieu d'essayer de jouer plus intelligemment, et je pense que cela a vraiment joué un rôle important. »
