Rookie Aber awesome, tallies six goals as lacrosse lads lasso Lakers


MONTREAL -- Rookie Patrick Aber of Boulder, Colorado, had a spectacular six-goal performance as McGill sunk the Nipissing University Lakers 14-9 in men's lacrosse at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday. The result marked a first career victory for head coach Nicolas Soubry, who evened his record at 1-1. It also marked the third straight loss for Nipissing, which made the long trip from North Bay, Ont.

Aber, an 18-year-old Arts freshman, became the 11th McGill player to tally at least six goals, which was one shy of the school record set by Anders Bjella in a 15-11 win over Western in the Baggataway Cup national championship game at Lennoxville on Nov. 8, 2015.

The Redbirds won all four quarters, leading 4-1 after one, 7-3 at halftime and 10-4 after the third stanza. They took the final quarter 4-1.

McGill starting goaltender Steven Pelliccione played the first half and conceded a pair of goals on five shots to collect the victory. He was relieved at the 30-minute mark by Henry Komosa, who was beaten three times on four shots.

Nipissing 'keeper Wyatt King started and took the loss, conceding seven goals in 30 minutes. He was replaced by Christian Rasmussen, who also allowed seven goals in his half.

McGill (1-1) hosts Ottawa (0-2) on Sunday in a 3:30 p.m. start at Molson Stadium. while Nipissing (0-2) will play at Carleton (1-1) on Sept. 18 at 2 p.m.
