Weatherall rules roost as rugby Redbirds ruffle Ravens in opener

OTTAWA – Team captain Monty Weatherall scored a game-high 14 points as McGill romped to a 56-3 victory at Carleton in their men's rugby season opener at Ravens Field, Saturday, in the nation's capital.

It was McGill's highest offensive output in 47 games overall – dating back to a 74-5 victory over ETS on Oct. 3, 2015 – and marked the first-ever meeting between these two clubs. The Carleton club was founded in 2016 and joined the RSEQ conference this season.

The Redbirds scored eight tries  – three shy of the school record – to earn a bonus point in the league standings, awarded to teams who score at least four tries in a game.

Weatherall, a six-foot fly-half from Amersham, in the U.K., made all seven of his conversion attempts, while teammate Martin Laval, a native of Hong Kong, who was called on to convert the other major.

McGill led 49-3 at halftime, with Charles Barrans scoring the lone Carleton points on a penalty kick.

Evan Tennant, an economics junior from Kirkland, Que., and senior Alex Pantis of Beaconsfield, Que., each scored a pair of tries to pace the Redbirds attack. Rounding out the scoring with one try apiece were seniors Neos Dionisopoulos of Westmount, Que., and Patrick Young of Derby Line, Vt., in addition to sophomore Elliot Descarreaux of Quebec City, and Nicolas Dube-Mercier of Rougemont, Que., a first-year transfer from Concordia.

Both teams resume play on Sept. 17. McGill (1-0) will host Ottawa (1-0) at Percival Molson Stadium in a 3 p.m. kickoff, followed an hour later by Carleton (0-1) playing host to the Montreal Carabins (0-1).
