McGill football to kickoff 150th year (and 141st season) at Queen's on Saturday

MONTREAL – One of the oldest football rivalries in Canada resumes this weekend for the first time in five years. McGill University will mark the 150th year since its football team was founded and the 141st season on the gridiron when the Redbirds confront Queen's on Saturday, Aug. 20. The exhibition game is slated for a 3 p.m. kickoff at Richardson Stadium in Kingston, Ont.

Tickets are available online at gogaelsgo.com/tickets. The game will not be streamed, nor broadcast on radio but live statistics are expected to be available during the game on the U SPORTS results site.

The longest operating varsity program at McGill, the football team was founded in 1872 but the squad missed six seasons during the two world wars and did not compete during the 2020 campaign that was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The upcoming preseason affair with Queen's renews a long-standing rivalry which dates back to a 10-1 McGill victory in 1886. It will be the first rendezvous between these clubs since a 38-24 victory for the Gaels in Kingston on Aug. 19, 2017.  Queen's leads the all-time series with a 101-75-5 record overall, including a 9-8 mark in the last 17 matchups. McGill's last win was a 22-17 decision at Percival Molson Stadium on Aug. 21, 2016.

A veteran Queen's team posted a 6-0 record in the OUA last season, while a young McGill squad registered a 1-7 record in the RSEQ conference.

This year, the Redbirds training camp roster is loaded with veterans and composed of 27 seniors, 20 juniors, 25 sophomores and 31 freshmen. McGill which traditionally features a solid defensive unit, is expected to show much improvement on offence this season, bolstered by a strong recruiting year.

One of the new faces to look for is the addition of 6-foot-4, 185-pound freshman Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald, arguably the top incoming quarterback in the country this season. A starter for Team Canada, he also led Vanier College to a Bol d'Or championship last fall and was voted as the Quebec Div. 1 CEGEP league's player of the year. He will no doubt be looking to hook up with All-Canadian wide receiver Darius Simmons of Lachine, Que., who was named as team MVP of the Redbirds last year.
