Joshua Archibald and
Tristan Fleury, two members of the McGill University Redbirds, were selected in the third and fifth rounds, respectively, in the 2022 Canadian Football League Draft, Tuesday.
McGill has now had 150 CFL draft picks since the first one way back in 1952.
Overall, 60 U SPORTS standouts were selected out of 74 total picks (81 percent) over eight rounds. The OUA led all conferences with 28 selections, followed by Canada West with 19, the RSEQ (10) and the AUS (3).
The Ottawa Gee-Gees had the most players picked with six.
In all, 21 of the 27 U SPORTS programs had at least one player chosen. Since 2007, a total of 716 U SPORTS football alumni have been drafted into the CFL, while approximately 200 Canadian university football standouts start the season on opening day rosters of the league's nine teams.
Archibald, who served as a co-captain at McGill, was chosen 23rd overall by the B.C. Lions. The 24-year-old economics senior from Montreal saw his stock rose significantly after participating at the College Gridiron Showcase in Fort Worth, Texas, Jan. 8-12. The 6-foot-3, 258-pound rush end, is a two-time RSEQ conference all-star who has drawn some interest from the NFL's New York Giants.
In 28 regular season contests over his career at McGill, Archibald registered 48 solo tackles and 36 assisted for 66 total tackles. He racked up 17 tackles for loss, including 10.5 quarterback sacks. He was also credited with four knockdowns, five forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries, including one returned 39 yards for a touchdown.
Fleury, also a co-captain, hails from Deux Montagnes, Que. The 24-year-old senior is completing a master's in physical therapy after graduating last spring with a science degree. He made the Principal's Student-Athlete Honour Roll. During the 2021 campaign, the 6-foot-2, 186-pound defensive back ranked eighth among RSEQ conference leaders in total tackles with 35 in eight games, including 28 solos. He was credited with four knockdowns and one interception. Over his four seasons, he has collected 96 total tackles in 30 games, including 78 solos. He has added one QB sack, a pair of interceptions, seven knockdowns and a forced fumble. Fleury was also selected for the 2020 East-West Bowl for CFL prospects.
