Jamal Mayali of the McGill University men's basketball team earned second team All-Canadian honours and teammate
Haris Elezovic merited all-rookie status as the U SPORTS men's basketball major awards were announced, Thursday, on the eve of the U SPORTS Final Eight national championship.
Mayali, a 23-year-old native of Toronto, becomes the 11th McGill All-Canadian in history and the sixth in the past 12 seasons.
It caps a banner season for the fifth-year political science senior, who was voted last week as player of the year and first-team all-star in the RSEQ conference. A 6-foot-1, 180-pound shooting guard, Mayali led the Quebec league in scoring with an average 18.3 points per game.
He was first in three-pointers made (39), second in three-point success rate (.419), third in minutes played (33.3 per game), fifth in both free-throw shooting (.755) and steals (1.5 spg), sixth in field-goal percentage (.456), 11th in assists (2.3 apg), 12th in defensive rebounds (3.4 rpg), and 20th in rebounding overall (3.5 rpg).
Elezovic, a 6-foot-8, 233-pound centre from Sherbrooke, Que., was 11th in the league scoring race and fourth in rebounding, with an average of 11.2 and 7.4 per game, respectively. The 21-year-old management freshman ranked second in free-throw success (.760) and fourth in field-goal shooting (.479).
Among the other award winners was Carleton forward
Lloyd Pandi, who was honoured with the Mike Moser Award as player of the year. Ryerson forward
Aaron Rhooms captured the Dr. Peter Mullins Award as rookie of the year, while Regina guard
Benjamin Hillis earned the Ken Shields Award for Student-Athlete Community Service. Finally, Alberta coach
Barnaby Craddock took home the Stuart W. Aberdeen Memorial Award as Fox 40 coach of the year.
Hosted by the Alberta Golden Bears, the Final 8 championship tourney starts on Friday and the event concludes Sunday with the gold medal game at 3:30 p.m. ET / 12:30 p.m. PT. All games are to be played at the Saville Community Sports Centre.
One of the quarter-finals on Friday, features a matchup between sixth-seeded McGill against No.3 Alberta, scheduled for 6 p.m. (Eastern).
