TRACK & FIELD – RSEQ CHAMPIONSHIP (Day 2): Senior sprinter Savoury shines, sets two records, snares three medals

McGill sprinter Jorden Savoury

SHERBROOKE – Jorden Savoury of LaSalle, Que., broke two records while winning a gold and two silver medals for the McGill women's track and field team at the RSEQ championships, a two-day indoor meet held at Universite de Sherbrooke over the weekend.

Teammate Makayla Mitchell of Nanaimo, B.C., was the only other McGill woman to strike gold, winning the pentathlon. Both merited first team all-star status, which is awarded to all gold medalists at the RSEQ championship meet. Silver medalists receive second-team honours.

The Martlets combined to collect two golds, six silvers and a pair of bronzes en route to finishing second of seven schools at the competition. Laval won the women's title with 281 points, followed by McGill (137), Montreal (88), Sherbrooke (51), Carleton (24), UQAM (9), UQAC (6) and UQTR (2).

Savoury, a 5-foot-8 sprints and jumps specialist, broke her own school, for the fifth time this season, Saturday, winning the 60m race in 7.46 seconds. That ranks as the second fastest time in the country this season, behind Guelph's Jacqueline Madogo (7.39). The RSEQ record is 7.31 set in 2009 by Laval's Genevieve Thibault,

Savoury, a 23-year-old psychology senior, registered silver-medal performances in the long jump and the 4x200 relay. Her leap of 5.80 metres was the sixth-best in the nation this year and broke the eight-year-old school record of 5.75m set by Helena Reinfels in 2014.

In the relay, Savoury ran lead off on a foursome that was clocked in 1:42.92, just missing the six-year-old school record of 1:41.25. Joining her in that race was sophomore Vanessa Lu Langley and freshman Audrey Gilmour, both natives of Ottawa, along with Bethany Walton-Knight, a freshman from North Vancouver. B.C.

Lu Langley claimed her other silver medal in the 60m hurdles (9.34 seconds).

In the grueling pentathlon, the aforementioned Mitchell, a 20-year-old pharmacology major, scored a combined 2,872 points over her five events to edge out teammate Leila McFarland by 236 points for gold. The 5-foot-8 junior also finished fourth in the 60m hurdles (10.10 seconds)

Rounding out McGill's silver medalists was a pair of sophomores, namely high jumper Emily Roest (1.50m) of Waterloo, Ont., and triple jumper Rosalie Lupien (9.87m) from Longueuil, Que.
