McGill trio merits all-conference honours as RSEQ announces 2022 football dream team

MONTREAL – Three members of the McGill University football team – Benjamin Labrosse, Darius Simmons and Zachary Aboud – have earned all-star honours as announced by the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec.

Labrosse, the only member of the Redbirds to be selected on defence, is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound cornerback who transferred to McGill this season after two years with Syracuse in the NCAA. The 23-year-old from Greenfield Park, Que., patrolled his side of the field with such authority that his territory was often avoided by opposing quarterbacks for much of the season. Nonetheless, he registered one knockdown and tied for the league lead with three interceptions, one of which was returned a league-high 74 yards for a touchdown against the second-place Montreal Carabins. Labrosse started all eight games and registered 32 total tackles, including 29 solos, for an average of four tackles per contest. He also returned four punts for 79 yards, an average of 19.8 per return – and ran back six kickoffs for 121 yards and a lofty 20.2 average.

Simmons, a six-foot, 178-pound slotback from Lachine, Que., led the RSEQ conference with an average of 120.2 reception yards per game, the league's only player to reach the century mark. The 23-year-old economics junior ranked second among league leaders with 601 total reception yards, on 30 catches in just five contests, scoring three touchdowns. He also ranked second in receptions per game (6.0) and second in all-purpose yards per contest (120.2).

Aboud, a 6-foot-1, 303-pound left guard, anchored the offensive line this season. The 22-year-old physical and health education started all eight games and played a key role in McGill being ranked second in rushing (144.8 yards per game). A physical specimen, he was instrumental in both in pass protection and protecting the interior of the o-line, which aided quarterback Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald to win the league's rushing title.
