MONTREAL –
Joshua Archibald, a co-captain with the McGill University football team, is among a handful of Canadians scheduled to participate in the College Gridiron Showcase in Fort Worth, Texas, Jan. 8-12.
The 24-year-old economics senior from Montreal is the second McGill football player attending an elite collegiate showcase for professional scouts this weekend.
Pearce Dumay, a wide receiver from the Little Burgundy region of Montreal, is slated to compete at the Podyum All-Star Bowl in Miami, Fla., on Jan. 9.
Archibald, a 6-foot-3, 258-pound rush end, is a two-time RSEQ conference all-star who has drawn some interest from the NFL's New York Giants. Recruited to McGill from Upper Canada College in 2017, Archibald became a starter in his sophomore year and was twice named to East-West Bowl game for potential CFL draft prospects although both events were cancelled by the coronavirus pandemic. In 28 regular season contests over his career at McGill, Archibald registered 48 solo tackles and 36 assisted for 66 total tackles. He racked up 17 tackles for loss, including 10.5 quarterback sacks. He was also credited with four knockdowns, five forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries, including one returned 39 yards for a touchdown. In 2019, Archibald received the Vic Obeck trophy as the team's most improved player.
"As we enter our eighth year, despite the constant challenges of a global pandemic, we are proud to say CGS is as strong as ever and continues to evolve and lead the industry in revolutionizing the draft process for players and teams alike," said Jose Jefferson, the event's executive director, in a press release. "From comprehensive data and technology-driven tools to the most relevant on-field evaluation structures, no other entity gives players quality opportunities."
Other CGS invitees joining Archibald from U SPORTS institutions include brothers
Jalen and
Tyson Philpot, both wide receivers from the Calgary Dinos, in addition to another set of brothers,
Tyrell Ford (CB, Waterloo) and
Tre Ford (QB, Waterloo). Rounding out that group is
Josiah Joseph (QB, Calgary),
Subomi Oyesoro (LB, Calgary),
Noah Zerr (OT, Saskatchewan),
Zack Fry (OL, Western) and
Anthony Federico (DE, Queen's).
The CGS puts players through practices and a controlled scrimmage with professional coaches. Players will also perform individual and team drills, participate in 1-on-1 drills, attend meetings, and have the opportunity for personal interviews with scouts and executives. In addition to exposure to scouts, the CGS provides participants with a strong professional football education component that includes mentoring, life coaching, and seminars that will benefit them as they move forward in their professional lives in or outside of football. Seminars related to financial education, the life of a professional athlete, and on- and off-field player expectations are offered.
