QUEBEC CITY –
Jorden Savoury, a fleet-footed sprinter with the McGill University women's track and field team, has broken a school record for the second successive meet.
The 5-foot-8 psychology senior and team captain from LaSalle, Que., was clocked at 7.55 seconds to post a silver-medal finish in the 60-metre race at the Crépuscule Hivernal Rouge et Or, an open meet held at Laval's indoor PEPS complex in Quebec City, Dec. 17.
She was edged out by two-hundredths of a second for top spot on the podium by Laval's
Audrey Leduc, who crossed the finish line in 7.53. Savourey's latest result ranks third-best among all sprinters competing at U SPORTS institutions this season, just behind Toronto's
Jasmine Lew, who ran a 7.54 at the York Christmas Open on Dec. 4.
Savoury, 23, also ranks ninth across the country in the long jump after clearing a height of 5.57m for bronze at the meet on Dec. 17. Her personal best with McGill is 5.41m set at the uAlbany Winter Classic, Feb., 7, 2020.
Looking at Savoury's previous sprint times, she surpassed her own school record of 7.61 established in the season-opening Martlet Classic meet held at McGill's Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse. That bettered the school record that she set multiple times in the 2019-20 season, which peaked with a season-best 7.65 on Jan. 24, 2020.
Her 2020 best time erased the previous McGill mark of 7.73, set 18 years earlier by
Ria Bradshaw in 2002. Over the past two seasons, Savoury has steadily lowered her personal best times with McGill, going from 7.71 to 7.69, 7.67, 7.66, 7.65 and 7.61 before reaching the 7.55 standard at the December meet hosted by Laval. The RSEQ conference record is 7.31, set by Laval's
Genevieve Thibault in 2009 at the Nationals in Windsor, Ont.
