MONTREAL – Three football players from McGill University are among the all-stars announced by the Reseau du sport etudiant du Quebec on Thursday, two days before the conference semifinals. Receiver
Darius Simmons of Lachine, Que., was selected on offence, while defensive end
Joshua Archibald of Montreal and linebacker
Benjamin Carre of Trois-Rivieres, Que., were named on defence.
Simmons, who turned 22 in October, is an economics major in his first year of eligibility after playing at the CEGEP level for John Abbott College. Despite missing two of McGill's eight games, the six-foot, 180-pound wide receiver had 34 receptions for 596 yards and one touchdown. He added 32 yards on a pair of kickoff returns. Simmons ranked first among RSEQ reception leaders in yards per catch (17.5), second in reception yardage per game (99.3), second in catches per game (5.7), fourth in all-purpose yards per game (104.7), fourth in reception yards and fifth in receptions.
Archibald, a 6-foot-3, 258-pound rush end in his fifth season, is an RSEQ all-star for the second time after earning a nod in 2019. The 23-year-old economics senior, who serves as a co-captain, was often double-teamed and missed one game with an injury but still managed to register 16 total tackles , 11 of them solos, in seven contests. He registered four tackles for loss, including 2.5 quarterback sacks, and had one fumble recovery which he returned 39 yards for a touchdown. Archibald, who was named to both the 2020 and 2021 East-West Bowl games that were cancelled by the pandemic, is a product of Upper Canada College.
Carre, a weak-side linebacker, previously merited all-star status as a defensive back in 2018. The 5-foot-11, 186-pounder registered 15 tackles in six games, including nine solos and a tackle for loss. A 25-year-old civil engineering senior in his fifth season, Carre also had a team-leading two interceptions, one knockdown and a forced fumble on a blocked punt. He was recruited out of Collège de Trois-Rivières.
The league's major individual award winners will be unveiled at a press conference on November 12 at 11 a.m. which will be held on the campus of the host university of the Dunsmore Cup final, the RSEQ title game.
The semifinals will both be played on Saturday, November 6 at 2 p.m. The Montréal Carabins will host Sherbrooke while Concordia will visit Laval scheduled to be broadcast live on TVA Sports. The two winning teams will play for the Dunsmore Cup on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m.
