MONTREAL –
Jorden Savoury of LaSalle, Que., set a McGill record at the Martlet Classic, held Saturday at the Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse, which marked the debut of the university indoor track and field season.
It is believed to be the first time in McGill history that a school record tumbled in the initial meet of the track schedule, as standards typically fall later in the calendar when athletes are tapering to qualify for Nationals.
The 23-year-old psychology senior won the women's 60-metre dash in 7.61 seconds, breaking her own school record of 7.65 previously set on Jan. 24, 2020. The 5-foot-8 sprinter finished first in the race, edging out
Audrey Jackson of the Montreal Carabins, who crossed the finish line in 7.66.
When Savoury initially broke the record in 2020, it erased the previous McGill mark of 7.73, set by
Ria Bradshaw in 2002. Over the past two seasons, Savoury has steadily lowered her personal best times with McGill, going from 7.71 to 7.69, to 7.67 to 7.66 and 7.65 before reaching the 7.61 standard at the Martlet Classic. The RSEQ conference record is 7.31, set by Laval's
Genevieve Thibault in 2009 at the Nationals in Windsor, Ont.
Other first-place finishes for McGill in the women's division were accomplished by
Emily Roest (high jump) of Waterloo, Ont.,
Mia Colaner (pole vault) of Windsor, Ont.,
Vanessa Lu Langley (60m hurdles) of Ottawa and the 4x200m relay squad. That quartet featured Lu Langley as the anchor, in addition to
Eden Muyard, a native of Jakarta,
Marianne Djigo of Halifax and Torontonian
Danielle Wahrhaftig.
On the men's side,
Jack Stanley of Victoria, B.C., won the 3,000m in 8:35.36. Also finishing first was the 4x200 relay, a foursome that included
Theodore Goujon of Santa Fe, Tex., in leadoff, followed by
Nicolas Bernard of Scarsdale, N.Y.,
Markus Geiger of Toronto and
A.J. Bimm of Brampton, Ont.
Another of McGill's top results occurred in the 60-metre hurdles, where
Asad Bilal of
Horsham, Penn., was clocked in 8.97 seconds, not too far off the team record of 8.19.
There was no team scoring at the meet which was an open competition used to prepare for the regular intercollegiate season. Next on the agenda is the Sherbrooke Invitational on Jan. 8.
