MONTREAL -- The McGill University men's basketball programs collected three major awards and had three all-stars when the
Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec announced their laureates, Wednesday.
In voting conducted by the league's head coaches, McGill's
Levi Londole has been named as the Quebec conference's most outstanding defensive player, while team captain
Sam Jenkins has won the award for leadership and community service, and bench boss
David DeAveiro has merited coach-of-the-year honours.
Londole also merited second-team all-star status, while teammates
Jamal Mayali and
Quarry Whyne earned first-team all-star honours. In addition,
Cameron Elliot was named to the all-rookie squad.
Londole has been voted the league's most outstanding defensive player for the second consecutive season and was a second-team all-star. The 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward from LaSalle, Que., played a key role in guiding McGill to the best defensive record in the Quebec league and eighth in the nation, allowing just 73.3 points against per game. A 25-year-old physical education junior, he possesses the versatility to defend both big and small players with equal efficiency. He reached the 10-rebound plateau three times and grabbed 64 of his 99 rebounds in the defensive zone and added 22 assists, 10 steals and seven blocked shots.
Offensively, Londole posted three double-doubles and registered an average of 11.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, while playing an average of 28.1 minutes of court-time. He shot a league-leading 59.9 per cent from the field, 31.3 from three-point range and 51.4 from the free-throw line.
Jenkins has won the league award for leadership and citizenship. A 21-year-old physical education junior from Hamilton, Ont., he serves as team captain and guided a very young McGill squad – one with no seniors – to a 12-4 first-place finish in the Quebec league. Off the court, Jenkins volunteers his time with REACH School, (Realistic Educational Alternatives for Children with Handicaps), a program based in St. Lambert, Que. He also volunteers at an annual Christmas gift-wrapping event for Sun Youth, an organization that supports the underprivileged in Montreal. He also serves on the Student Athletics Council, a committee designed to offer McGill Athletics & Recreation participants the opportunity to provide feedback on programming and operations. In his hometown, Jenkins volunteers with the McNabb Basketball Literacy camp.
On the court, the 6-foot-5, 196-pound guard started all 16 games, averaged 30.1 minutes, 12.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He shot 41.7 per cent from the field, 30.4 from beyond the arc and 79.1 from the foul-line. He led the team in assists (45) and steals (26) and his 36-point game against Laval on Nov. 7, 2019, was the second-highest single-game offensive output in the league this season. His six-trey game against Concordia on Nov. 23, 2019, tied for the second-best performance among Quebec league leaders.
DeAveiro has merited coach-of-the-year honours for the ninth time in his career, including six in the RSEQ conference. The 55-year-old native of Toronto led McGill to a 12-4 first-place finish, the team's seventh Quebec league pennant in eight years. DeAveiro has guided his troops to five conference championships, five appearances at the national Final Eight tourney, an impressive 116-44 record in league play (.725) and an 11-5 record in the RSEQ playoffs. By comparison, during the eight years prior to his arrival, the team had a 40-87 league record and an 0-4 mark in playoffs. DeAveiro owns a 409-264 record in 673 career games overall in 19 years at the U SPORTS level, with a 199-137 overall mark in 10 seasons at McGill.
Mayali, a 6-foot-4, 178-pound shooting guard from Toronto, finished third in the league scoring race with an average of 17.4 points per game and pulled down an average of 4.7 rebounds per outing. One of the top overall shooters in the Quebec league, the 21-year-old political science junior was fourth in field-goal shooting (51.8 per cent), His season-best performance at the line was a 12-for-12 performance against Laval on Jan. 8, 2020. He led in three-point shooting (47.8) and ranked third in free-throw success rate (78.3). Mayali, who made the conference all-rookie team three-years ago, started in all 16 games this season and averaged 31.8 minutes of court-time per game. He also ranked sixth among league leaders in steals (1.6 per game) and was credited with 24 assists and five blocked shots. Mayali reached the 20-point plateau five times, not including a 31-point effort in a road game at Bishop's on Nov. 21, 2019.
Whyne, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound shooting guard from Montreal, ranked eighth among league scoring leaders (13.8 ppg) and 16th in rebounding (5.3). The 21-year-old economics sophomore was ninth in steals (1.4 spg), 11th in assists (2.6 apg) and 10th in free-throw shooting at 70.8 per cent. He posted one double-double, had three 20-point performances -- with a single-game high of 22 -- and posted a season-high 10 rebounds once.
Elliot, a 6-foot-4 rookie guard from Ottawa, started all 16 games and logged an average of 29.6 minutes of court time. The 19-year-old management freshman averaged 6.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, He led the team with 54 assists and was credited with 24 steals -- two shy of the team lead -- and tied a single-game league-best with five steals in a game at Bishop's on Feb. 8, 2020. Elliot shot 33 per cent from the floor, 29.2 from three-point range and made 66.7 per cent of his free-throw attempts.
