MONTREAL – Rookie guard Sean Duff of Ste-Anne-des-Plaines, Que., scored a game-high 26 points in his McGill debut, but it wasn't enough as the Redbirds opened their 124th men's basketball season with an 85-77 exhibition loss to the visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks, Sunday afternoon at Love Competition Hall.
Norm Burry paced the Sea-Hawks with 23 points and eight rebounds, while teammate Javian Downey added 21. Both Andrew Robinson and Jojo Moudiandambu chipped in eight apiece for Memorial.
For McGill, Duff drained five treys and added five rebounds. Miles King contributed 15 points and four assists, while Griffin Collinson and Alexandre Fortin tallied 12 apiece.
The Redbirds were guided by Ryan Thorne, entering his sixth season as men's head coach after 17 years at the helm of McGill's women's program. His current roster is among the youngest in school history, with nine rookies – including two second-year transfers – along with four sophomores and six juniors.
Memorial (1-2) will visit Collège Brébeuf on Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. McGill (0-1) is slated to host Ottawa on Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.

MONTRÉAL – Le garde recrue Sean Duff, originaire de Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, au Québec, a marqué 26 points, le plus grand nombre de points de la partie, lors de ses débuts avec McGill, mais cela n'a pas suffi pour empêcher les Redbirds de perdre leur 124e saison de basket-ball masculin par 85 à 77 lors d'un match amical contre les Sea-Hawks de Memorial, dimanche après-midi au Love Competition Hall.
Norm Burry a mené les Sea-Hawks avec 23 points et huit rebonds, tandis que son coéquipier Javian Downey en a ajouté 21. Andrew Robinson et Jojo Moudiandambu ont chacun contribué huit points pour Memorial.
Pour McGill, Duff a réussi cinq tirs à trois points et ajouté cinq rebonds. Miles King a contribué 15 points et quatre passes décisives, tandis que Griffin Collinson et Alexandre Fortin ont chacun marqué 12 points.
Les Redbirds étaient guidés par Ryan Thorne, qui entame sa sixième saison en tant qu'entraîneur principal de l'équipe masculine après avoir passé 17 ans à la tête du programme féminin de McGill. Son effectif actuel est l'un des plus jeunes de l'histoire de l'école, avec neuf recrues – dont deux transferts de deuxième année – ainsi que quatre étudiants de deuxième année et six étudiants de troisième année.
Memorial (1-2) se rendra au Collège Brébeuf le 29 septembre à 20 h. McGill (0-1) accueillera Ottawa le 4 octobre à 14 h.
