HOOPS PLAYOFF PREVIEW: McGill men to battle UQAM, Martlets fly coop to Laval


MONTREAL -- The 2020 post-season has finally arrived and both McGill University basketball teams face semifinals tonight (Feb. 26). The division-leading McGill men's squad (12-4) will host fourth-place UQAM (8-8) in a 7 p.m., winner-take-all, sudden-death affair at Love Competition Hall, located inside the Sir Arthur Currie gym, 475 Avenue des Pins Ouest.

Wednesday's other men's playoff rendezvous has third-place Bishop's (8-8) at second-seeded Concordia (10-6), also at 7 p.m. Both semifinal winners will cross paths in the Quebec league championship game on Saturday (Feb. 29).

On the the women's side of the draw, fourth-place McGill (7-9) plays division-leading Laval (12-4) in Quebec City tonight, also at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to Saturday's final.

The other ladies semi has third-place UQAM (7-9) at second-seeded Bishop's (10-6).

UQAM-McGILL MEN"S PLAYOFF HEAD-TO-HEAD PREVIEW:

The UQAM-McGill men's semifinal matchup will be their fifth meeting of the season and there isn't much to choose between the teams. The cross-town rivals split their season series, with both winning once on each other's court. The Citadins outscored McGill 299-290 and held a 138-123 edge in rebounding, but McGill had a favourable 62-57 advantage in turnovers.

Over the four games, McGill shot 45.2 per cent from the field (109/241), 26.0 from three-point range (27/104) and 75.0 from the free-throw line (45/60).

The Citadins shot 41.5 per cent from the floor (113/272), 27.4 from long range (31/113) and 76.4 from the line (42/55).

The first two meetings were both on UQAM turf, with the Citadins winning 94-71 on Nov. 14 and McGill bouncing back to prevail 74-59 on Jan. 16. When the scene shifted to Love Competition Hall, UQAM took the first rendezvous 81-75 on Jan. 18 but McGill rebounded to win the last matchup 70-65 on Feb. 20.

McGILL-LAVAL WOMEN"S PLAYOFF HEAD-TO-HEAD PREVIEW:

Laval had a 3-1 edge in their season series with the Martlets. The Rouge et Or outscored McGill 215-182 and had a 150-135 margin in rebounding. The Martlets had a favourable 70-56 advantage in turnovers.

Over the four games, McGill shot 26.8 per cent from the field (61/228), 25.7 from three-point range (24/94) and 80.0 from the free-throw line (36/45).

Laval shot 32.3 per cent from the floor (73/226), 31.5 from downtown (34/108) and 70.0 from the charity stripe (35/50).

The Rouge et Or took the first confrontation 43-35 at Love Competition Hall on Nov. 7 but the Martlets turned the tables in the rematch at Centre PEPS with a 61-60 victory on Nov. 28. Laval then won the next two by scores of 57-46 in Montreal (Jan. 8) and 55-40 in the provincial capital (Jan. 10).
