MONTREAL -- The 25th annual McGill Team Challenge track and field meet is scheduled for this Friday and Saturday (Jan. 24-25) at Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse on the campus of McGill University.

The event, billed as the largest indoor track meet in Canada, will feature some 50 teams and clubs, including 17 universities, over 640 athletes and 1,180 entries, all hoping to reach qualifying standards for the U SPORTS national championships in Edmonton, March 5-7.

Among the institutions registered at the McGill Team Challenge are eight out of the Quebec-based RSEQ conference, five from the OUA, four from the AUS, and one from Canada West.

Tomlinson Fieldhouse is located inside the Sir Arthur Currie gym, on the campus of McGill University, located at 475 Pine Avenue West. Tickets, available online or at the door, will be $12 for adults, $7 for non-McGill students, $5 for McGill students and seniors. Children 12-and-under are admitted free. Groups can gain admission for only $20 total.

The highest profile races of the Team Challenge are usually the 60m, 300m, 600m and 1000m, while the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relays, are arguably the most exciting events to watch.

Friday's track schedule features heats and preliminaries during the day and finals in the evening. Although the schedule technically begins at 9 a.m. (Eastern) with the weight throw followed by heptathlon and pentathlon, the bulk of the fan-friendly events runs from 5:15 p.m. to 10 p.m., beginning with the the 60m, 1000m, 3000m and the 4x200 and 4x800 relays.

After the morning weight throw, other field events that follow include the triple jump (2:30 p.m.), shot put (3:30 p.m.), pole vault (6 p.m.), triple jump (7 p.m.) and high jump (7:55 p.m.).

The official opening ceremonies are set for 7:10 p.m., followed by the women's 60m dash final, slated for 7:15 p.m. where everyone will be chasing both the meet record (7.34 seconds) and the Fieldhouse record (7.29). The men's 60m final is set for 7:20 p.m., and the marks to aim for are 6.71 (meet record) and the 6.56 (Fieldhouse record).

On Saturday, the schedule begins with long jump at 10 a.m. and is expected to conclude by 5 p.m. The 60m hurdles final is set for 10:45 a.m., followed by the 600m, high jump, shot put, 300m, long jump, pole vault, 1500m and the always exciting 4x400m relay.
