McGill football falls to 1-1 after loss to undefeated and No.3 ranked Carabins

MONTREAL -- Kicker Louis-Philippe Simoneau scored 20 points and nailed six field-goals as the No.3 ranked Montreal Carabins ran their unblemished record streak to 3-0 with a 34-4 victory over McGill at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.

It was Montreal's 100th lifetime victory and their 25th consecutive win over their cross-town rivals since a 58-0 McGill conquest on Oct. 7, 2002.

McGill led 3-2 after the opening quarter and failed to take advantage of five early turnovers before the visitors took control with a 12-3 halftime advantage. The Carabins outscored McGill 13-0 in the third and 9-1 in the final stanza. Montreal had a 24-11 edge in first downs and produced 430 yards of net offence, compared to 163 by the home side.

Simoneau, who sat out last season dealing with cancer, went 6-for-7 in his place-kicking, connecting from distances of 47, 30, 41, 21, 44 and 21. He averaged 34.5 yards on two punts and 56.0 on four kickoffs.

McGill's offence came solely from the foot of kicker Findlay Brown, who was only 1-for-4 in field goals, including a rouge on a missed 34-yarder. He connected on a 27-yard effort to put his troops ahead 3-0 in the first quarter but missed back-to-back attempts in the second quarter from distances of 37 and 36 yards. Brown also averaged a lofty 45.1 yards on nine punts.

McGill sophomore quarterback Dimitrios Sinodinos was 13-for-32 passing, for 157 yards and two picks. He was sacked twice. His leading receiver was a running back, with Donavan Marcel making six receptions for 84 yards. McGill only had three rushing plays in the entire game, with Martel gaining only one net yard on three carries.

Carabins quarterback Dimitri Morand threw for 289 yards and one touchdown. He completed 25 of 32 pass attempts and was picked off twice. His four-yard TD toss to Antoine Chabot put Montreal ahead 9-3 at 10:42 of the second stanza.

The backbreaker for host team was a 66-yard interception return for TD by Radha Kramdi that put the Carabins ahead 25-3 with 2:01 remaining in the third quarter.

Next week features a showdown between two of the top three teams in the nation, with No. 1 Laval (2-0) traveling to Montreal to play the third-ranked Carabins (3-0) on Sept. 14.

McGill (1-1) travels to Sherbrooke (0-2) for a "Friday the 13th" affair against the Vert & Or at 7 p.m. A McGill victory would put them in solid position for at least a third-place finish.

GAME NOTES: The McGill defence was led by veteran safety Tristan Fleury with nine solo tackles and a pair of assisted tackles. He was also credited with one forced fumble and a knockdown... McGill interceptions were registered by rush end Xavier Bilodeau (who also had one QB sack) and defensive back Benjamin Carre. Four different ball-hawks now have a combined four picks on the season... The McGill front seven, which had six QB sacks in the season-opener against Concordia, added another four against the Carabins, including ones credited to Alexandre Pare, Anthony Leclerc and Josh Archibald, who had two forced fumbles.
