SHERBROOKE -- Running back
Zachary Cloutier scored the game's only touchdown on a one-yard plunge with just seven seconds remaining as the Sherbrooke Vert & Or rallied for a 16-14 victory over visiting McGill in RSEQ football, Friday, before an announced crowd 7,985.
McGill, which last won on Sherbrooke turf two years, dropped to 8-18 lifetime versus the Vert & Or, including a 3-9 mark at Sherbrooke.
The remainder of the scoring came from five field goals and four safeties. The game featured a staggering 39 penalties for 370 yards of real estate, split relatively equally. The teams were tied 3-3 after the opening quarter, then McGill led 12-3 at the half and took a 12-5 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The result put a damper on a 4-for-4 field-goal performance by McGill junior
Findlay Brown, who connected from distances of 43, 23. 32 and 18, in cool, windy conditions. The native of Winnipeg also averaged 38.3 yards on nine punts and 58.0 on a pair of kickoffs.
Trailing 14-9 with 63 seconds remaining, Sherbrooke took over the ball on their own 50-yard line after a 15-yard penalty was assessed to McGill for unnecessary roughness. Back-up quarterback
Gabriel Cote engineered a gam-winning six-play, 60-yard drive, capped by the one-yard TD plunge. It was his only carry of the game.
Cote, who only saw duty in the last drive, finished with a 2-for-2 passing effort for 17 yards. He replaced starter
Antoine Robichaud, who passed for 194 on 22-for-37 passing, with two interceptions.
McGill quarterback
Dimitrios Sinodinos was 12-for-27 passing, for 135 yards and one pick. He was also the team's leading rusher, with just 18 yards on three carries.
Sherbrooke had an 18-7 edge in first downs and had only 246 net yards compared to 142 by the visitors. Both sides had four turnovers.
Next week, McGill (1-2) will play at Laval (2-1) on Sunday, Sept. 22, while Sherbrooke (1-2) plays at Concordia (0-3).
