Galloping gourmet Greenbaum gets game-winner as Gaiters fall to rugby Martlets

LENNOXVILLE, Que. -- Senior Dana Silerova tallied 15 points and sophomore Joely Greenbaum of Chateauguay, Que., scored the game-winning try with six minutes remaining as the visiting McGill University women's rugby team rallied for a 25-22 thriller over Bishop's in the RSEQ season-opener at Coulter Field, Sunday.

It marked the Martlets first win in almost two years, dating back to a 40-8 home victory over Bishop's on Oct. 6, 2017, ending an 0-7-1 winless streak.

In a spirited contest that featured seven lead changes, the Martlets took a slim 13-12 advantage into the intermission and then won the second stanza 12-10.

Silerova, a 5-foot-7 fullback from Terrasse Vaudreuil, Que., was named as McGill's player of the game. She scored a pair of tries, along with a penalty kick and one conversion. The 22-year-old geology major, who previously  played for the Canadian national under-20 squad, put the Martlets ahead 8-0 by the 22-minute mark on a penalty-kick and a try. After the Gaiters bounced back for a 12-8 lead at the 32-minute mark, Silerova responded with another try in the final minute of the opening half to regain the lead at 13-12. She then converted on Greenbaum's winning try.in the 74th minute.

Taylor Merrithew of Kingston, Ont., tallied a game-high 17 points for Bishop's. She scored two tries and set up a third, where a rare penalty try was awarded. Rounding out the scoring for BU was Erika Scott of Dewittville, Que., who scampered 75 yards down the left sideline to give the Gaiters a short-lived 22-18 lead in the 63rd minute.

Ten minutes later, Greenbaum, an international development studies sophomore, galloped about 50 yards for the back-breaking try.
