McGill alpine ski team wins four medals at RSEQ championships

STONEHAM, Que. -- The McGill University alpine ski team produced four podium finishes at the RSEQ championships, a three-day meet held at the Mont-Stoneham Resort, located north of Quebec City, March 15-17.

Abigail Thomas, a kinesiology sophomore from Ottawa who returned earlier in the week from representing Canada at the FISU games in Siberia, paced the Martlets with a silver in Thursday's giant slalom and a bronze in Saturday's slalom course. Thomas reached the podium five times in eight races, winning silver twice and bronze three times.

The other member of the Martlets to medal was Camille Vibert, an arts freshman from Orillia, Ont., who produced a bronze medal finish in Friday's slalom. Over the season, Vibert finished third of 27 skiers in the circuit and was team's top point-getter, edging out Thomas -- who was fourth -- by only 10 points in the final individual standings.

Martlets team captain Sarah Mains, a third-year international development studies major, finished sixth in the RSEQ scoring race.

On the men's side, McGill's Zachary Mayne, a finance sophomore from Thornbury, Ont., won bronze in the giant slalom. It was the team's first medal over the season's eight-race schedule. Mayne was the team's fifth-leading scorer and finished 18th of 38 skiers overall in the conference.

Teammmate Alexander Valentin, an arts freshman from Whistler, b.C., led the team scoring over the season, placing 10th overall in the RSEQ circuit.

McGill collected 3,951 points to finish second on the women's side -- for the third consecutive year -- behind the Montreal Carabins, who won the title with 5,135.

In the men's division, McGill was third with 3,097 points, behind league champion Laval (4,853) and Montreal (4,577).
